    Tigé GM Vortec 5.7L multiport EFI — 340 HP

    Hello, First post for me.

    I'm planning to purchase a 2006 22Ve and I'm concerned about the HP. My current boat is a 26' bow rider with a 420 HP Volvo so I'm used to having lots of power.

    In your honest opinions is the Tigé GM Vortec 5.7L multiport EFI — 340 HP enough motor? If not, is it upgradable? Meaning can you chip it, add or change out some components to get more power? I don't expect to go 65 like you can in my current ride, but I'd like to feel I have all the power I need to go 45 quickly from a stand still.

    We always have 8-9 people in the boat. We pull boarders and tubers with no problem in my current set up, but it's a bow rider and we want to move to a full wakeboard/ski boat.

    I think you will be more than fine with that power plant set up. I have a 340 HP Black Scorpion engine in my 20i, and it is almost too much power. I've read posts on here about people with similar sized boats as yours, and they tow boarders, use lots of ballast and have full passenger loads with no problems.

        I have the exact boat, getting ready for our 3rd season, and can tell you that this power plant is a beast Its not uncommon to have either 8-11 people (older teens and adults, not lil kids) or 4-5 plus ballast, and no problems with hole-shot or for the cruise to hold speed.

        Now, as far as speed, if you need a boat that will run 45 and faster, a wakeboard boat may not be the thing for you. These boats, no matter who's you buy, are geared and propped for water sports and not top end.

        For $350 and 15 mins, you can re-prop one for added hole shot, but this would not be noticed unless you were running tons of ballast.

            The 340hp engine is more than adequate for a 22Ve and is a rock solid powerplant. You won't find a wakeboard/waterski boat that goes over 45 because most of the hull doesn't leave the water, bowriders actually lift out of the water some and leave very little surface area in the water which allows them to run faster whereas a wakeboard boat stays down low in the water to create a large wake.

                      I have the 24Ve, with the same motor, and a large family of 6 kids. I also regularly take other families out with us, pushing the 16 person capacity on our boat. Even with ballast in the boat on top of all those people, the 340HP motor has amazed me with the amount of power. I had 10 people in the boat, and 1000 lbs of ballast, and I was still able to hit 42mph when the water was flat, and that suprised me.

                      Not only that, and i have said this many times in other threads, you will be amazed at the fuel economy you will get from this setup. I had a 22 ft four winns before this boat, a horizon 220 with a 280HP 5.7 with the touted duo-prop setup. It was a big step up in power from the boat previous. I never used ballast on the fourwinns, and didn't even tow as much as I do now, and never surfed. I averaged about 8 gallons per hour.

                      I put 200 hours on my Tige 24Ve this summer. 90% of those hours was constant towing of wakeboarders and surfing. We loaded about 1000lbs of ballast in the boat as we headed onto the lake, and didn't empty it til we hit the 5mph buoys on the way out. We averaged 6 gallons per hour.

                      Anyway, you are going to have plenty of power, and still be putting money back in your pocket. That 420HP motor probably got you maybe 12 gallons per hour at best.

                      For the record, I just ASSUMED I would be paying more for gas with my new expensive tow boat. This was just a bonus for me that completely floored me. I was NOT looking for this. I almost bought a malibu and was looking for the 400+HP engine, but I trusted my dealer on the tige engine, and it was a great decision.

                        Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate all the comments and personal data points. I live in Washington State so it's a little tough to go test drive right now.
