    running out of the water

I was just wondering what people prefer to use when running their boat out of the water. Do most of you use a fake a lake, or have you plumbed in a fitting to hook directly to the hose? Also, are there other alternatives? I didn't know if there is anything that would screw directly into the water intake on the bottom of the boat.

I built my own rig to hook right up to the tranny. Pretty simple just a valve and reducers to get a garden hose hooked up. I hook direct to the tranny so it flushes my whole system. Also with the same valve I can hook a 5 gal buck when I winterize to run RV antifreeze through it.
That is my set up pretty simple but it works well. Also it only cost about 15 bucks to make.

I made a fake a lake with parts from Home Depot.

Turbonine, how exactly did you do that? Can you give me a general idea?

Sam, this is going to sound real dumb. Do the transmissions on inboards have lake water flowing through them? I just assumed they had transmission fluid like a car. I like the concept of your system. Do you have any pics?

Our boat is a V, but the drive line components should be similar. The trans should have Dexron III in it if it's a Velvet Drive. The trans will have 2 hoses carrying trans fluid to a raw water cooler down below the side of the engine (similar to a trans cooler in a car, except the car cooler is in a radiator tank). Sam may have been tying into the raw water lines that pass thru the V-drive gearbox casing. On our boat I added a full-flow ball valve in the hose between the raw water pickup and the V-drive. A tee can be added with fittings at the next connection to provide an input port for a hose or whatever. The ball valve will keep the water from flowing back thru the raw water pickup and as a secondary function - provide a "master shut-off" of the raw water line if something starts leaking.

R&T is correct, I was talking about the raw water pickup. I should have made that clear. Also R&T is correct about the fluid in the trans.
Just a side note and some please correct me if I am wrong. The trans should be a velvet and you should have a gear redction which I think is a walter after looking at the pdf it appears they are one and the same...my bad. I am also just learning the ins and outs of a inboard.
Here is a link the velvet drive info.

Sam, your V-drive boat will have a Transmission (probably the Borg-Warner Velvet) bolted to the engine. Bolted to that, will be the V-Drive unit (probably the Walter) and then to the prop shaft.

Not positive, but I think the DD use a reduction Trans (1.5 I think). I know my Ve used a 1:1 and I don't know about a V-drive ratio as the Walter does come in different ratios.

Our 2000 21V has a 1:1.46 Walter V-drive unit in it. I've heard others (maybe not 21Vs, but same years) have 1:1 units. This would only affect what props would be used. It's similar to changing gears in a car differential and adjusting the tire diameter. I think Borg Warner does makes a V-drive gearbox, but I've haven't heard of anyone that has one installed.

Plunger, 10 ft of hose with a female adapter at one end, and some sort of coupler that worked like a grommet for the hole I cut in the plunger and also allowed me to connect the hose to. This coupler involved me staring confused at hose parts in the garden section of Home Depot for at least 10 minutes till i finally decided on which piece would work.
