Does anyone know for sure what are the rules and regulations about boating at night?

Is it true that we should not pull anyone after dark?

If so why do most of new boats provide light?

Depends on you lake. Most do not allow riding at night. Some lakes have night time speed limits, and ofcourse you are required you navigation lights, the red and green and 360* pole light.

If lights you mean docking lights they arent there as headlights. They illuminate your approach to the dock and trailer. If you drive with them they are distracting to other drivers and confuzing. Tower lights are similiar in purpose.

Can't talk for other states but in Cali there's no boarding or skiing after dusk and the speed limit is like 10mph 15 minutes after dusk i believe. Most mfgrs provide the lights because the consumers want them, it's style. They help a bit for docking and loading but that's about all.

Your talking transom light?

Most public lakes say no pulls (ski, surf, board, tube,) 1 hr after sunset, and 1hr before sun up.

I would love to surf @ night, but I know I would be the one to get a ticket

I've seeing a few people at Lake Powell wakeboarding at night when the water settles a little from the day activities.

I personally try to wake up at 5 in the morning to get a couple hours of good water

Sounds like a great LMCWOR activity. I doubt there are any rangers at that end of the lake at that time of night/day. We have the light under the swim platform and so far haven't had the opportunity to use it.

I've gone at night(hour or so after dusk) a few times(I know a big no-no!) and have come close to a ticket/warning once. I would NEVER go in the middle of the night though.

Utah state law is no pulling a rider or tuber after sunset or before sunrise.

A good friend of mine was given a citation for this on Powell a few years ago.

It is only illegal if you get caught

I think it is not very prudent to wakeboard or ski when it is dark. I love a little post sunset riding when it seems like the visibility is good.

If you look at a few of the threads of thrashed boats, I am sure most of those accidents happened at night.

I've used the under the swim platform a few times when at lake powell and the kids want to refresh at night. But never driving.

Several years ago, after parking my old boat high and dry on the rocks, I learned that on Lake Mead the night time speed limit is 15mph and no towing. I learned my lesson, I don't drive the boat after dark anymore.
That being said, nothing beat boarding on sheet glass under the full moon.

Dang, we have fisherman running up and down our lake all hours of the night @ 60mph

We take one of those 1 million candle light spot lights and turn that on periodically just to check the shoreline

Bottom line is safety... You know that if it was legal we'd ALL be out there after dark and someone would get hurt...

That is going on at Lake Mead as well. Its just not leagal. In 20 years I have never seen a ranger on Mead at night.
