    Sorry Another Dumb Question?

what exactly does winterizing your boat mean, or better yet, what needs to be done and why, what happens if you dont? thanks

This is from another post under maintenance forum.

    1. Change the oil and filter before storing your boat. Used oil sitting in your manifold will deteriorate seals and components.

    2. Fog your engine if you're letting it sit for 9 months. There's a nice summary of this procedure in the October Waterski magazine.

    3. Replacing the water in your block with RV Antifreeze (the stuff used for waterlines in RVs so its biodegradable and Sierra Club friendly). This will inhibit any rusting or scaling taking place in your block and exhaust manifolds (i.e will extend the life of your $500+ each mufflers...especially important in a humid climate).

    4. Change the fuel filter before running fuel stabilizer through your fuel system.

    5. Check and top-off the transmission fliuid.

    6. Wax your boat. Any bad poop left on your boat throughout the winter will eat your gel coat.

You forgot to say add fuel stabilizer and run the engine before you do any of this. Fuel stabilizer is a good idea if you plan to store your boat for a while.

If it gets freezing and you have drained the block or put in anitfreeze, it will crack the block

Fuel stabilizer is a must...especially if it's sitting for a month or more unused. Hate to see the varnish develop and gum up the engine. Go for Stabil!

You should be able to find it at any autoparts store... Autozone, NAPA, etc...

Trans and V-drive oil should be changed every 100hrs or annually

                  http://www.tigeowners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5510

Lube steering, drain bilge, clean and repack trailer bearings (unless oil bath), adjust breaks (drum only), rotate tires, top off the charge on the battery(s).

After adding the Stabilizer, drive around the block (or up the the gas station and top off the tank if needed) and then you need to run the engine (with a water supply) to get the Stabilizer into the entire fuel system.
