    Cat converters on all 08's in CA

    Thanks to the our governator Arnold I hear all 08 boats will need cat converters. Not that this is a totally bad thing but what will be the good and bad things about this? Will it reduce engine power of the boats or not affect them at all? The dealer I talked to said that the boats will run hotter. I wonder what Tige is going to do to approach this? Also is this just for California?

    I suppose the obvious thing is that someone will have to pay for those---it ain't gonna be Tige or Bu or CC or Bayliner....the consumer will pay more for a boat. It's not even like they can stamp a piece of crap out of ordinary steel. You put the word "marine" on anything and the price doubles or triples.

    On the positive side though perhaps it may help with emissions. Since I personally see several thousand semi trucks spewing putrid black smoke every single day, somebody has to cut thier emissions- easier to pick on a smaller industry that can't fight back as well as truckers and truck manufacturers.

    Not that I'm opposed to it neccesarily, it just irks me to see the obvious offenders ignored. Just doesn't really make sense to me to worry about some boats when thier contributions to the problem are negligable in the grand scheme of things. Kinda like why 2-stroke MX bikes were berated by Greenies because of thier emissions. Dumb.
    Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

        I just replaced the one on our '89 Ford van 7.5L. Got if for $225. Cut out the old one and put in the new one, not any harder than replacing a muffler. Want to bet it will cost $1K for a pair of "marine" ones?

          I dont see how he can force this into action on even the 09's You cant just bolt them on and say "here ya go" Hell, the 08's have been out for what.....4 months now.

          Overall engine temps may rise a little, but the problem will be the temp in the engine bay. Cat's have to be HOT to work. On a car, the don't begin to convert until about 400* F and can reach 1200*. And that's with air circulating all around them. Indmar put them on all their 07's but I haven't heard anything good or bad yet.

          Should not see any loss of performance. On a car, we typically see less then 2psi exhaust back pressure until we get in the 5000rpm range and over. Modern day Cat's are fairly free flowing.

          Yes, they are expensive, dont forget the Palladium and Rhodium in there too.

                It's a special cat for marine engines, i can't remember which mfgr but either Mastercraft or Correct Craft is already using them on the boats nationwide.

                  I have them on my 07 Indmar. I don't notice any power loss or any other negative side effect. The one thing that you do notice is that you dont get much of an exhaust odor(taste) while near the platform. I have heard it commonly referred to as a dry mouth feeling(as if you took a couple puffs from the tailpipe) from the CO2. When on my boat now, most people can't even tell the engine is running.
