    Deepening the Castle Rock cutoff

Does anyone know much about this?

I think that is a terrific idea. It would sure make the channel less congested and in fact even make boating Lake Powell safer.

This is not the right link, but you get the idea: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectH...rojectId=20386

It appears they are taking public opinion on this issue. I suppose we need to speak up because the enviros will be claiming Lake Powell needs to be drained all over again...and there is an endangered chub that lives there and blah blah blah.

It would save time, money for boat owners, and the environmental air pollutants when reducing the time it takes to get to the other side of the lake!!!! Sounds like a winner to me.

I'm actually on the fence about draining the lake, removing the dam and letting it return to the natural river. There is about 3 generations of us that have never seen the gorge as it once was. With the water low like it is , there are trails, burial ground, pictographs, etc, that have been found that were flooded over when the dam was built.

I can see both sides of the debate. And yes, i'm a part time tree hugger.

I have also heard this rumor but it was back in the summer of '06. I think it would be a great idea to do this. It would save a lot of time and fuel(natural resource for you enviros) for those of us who launch out of Wahweap. And also the hassle of going through the narrows and past Antelope. Plus that water gets pretty choppy in there and my boat gets bumped a lot. I guess that wouldn't be such an issue if I had a Tige.

If they already have a cutoff why not make it bigger???

Agree........very little environmental impact as this will be under water. The ??? would be, is 15' enough. What is the yearly drop of the lake and at this rate, how long would this "band-aid" work.

That is true with anything. How much bang for the buck will come from this project????? 20 years for $2-3 Million???? Sounds okay but if it's only 2 years, then why do it...

I am actually a part time Greenie for a few things as well, but draining Lake Powell is definitely not one of them. As far as appreciating the natural beauty of the area, about 1/1000th of the people who appreciate it now, could appreciate it if the lake were drained. To be honest, I think that when people see Lake Powell, they become MORE likely to want to save some of the natural beauty the world has, but if you drain it, no one sees it, and then no one will give a darn.

How many people would hike 4 days to Rainbow bridge if the lake were drained? It would most likely take longer if you count the return trip.

Go to the Grand Canyon if you want to see what it used to look like.

The Army Corps of Engineer's are doing the job from what I have seen. But I am sure it's in the millions of dollars.

The Corps just updated the levies here in Sacramento, CA for $1.5 million. I think that is what they paid for the update...

Very good point, probably more boaters then hikers. To answer your question.......I would
