    Insurance

Well I pick up the new boat tomorrow... I might have a chance to get it out this weekend but I doubt it...

Anywho... I called my insurance provider SkiSafe to start a new policy and they apparently did not want my business anymore... It kind of makes me mad but whatever... I probably wouldn't want to do business with the guy I just paid 46k to replace their boat...

So I'm curious to know who you guys are using... My old policy was about $475 per year and of course I know it's going to be more after making a claim... (BTW this is the first ever insurance claim I've made in my life)

So far I've gotten quotes from about $600 to $900...

Thanks in advance for your input...

I'm kinda partial to Allstate for some reason

Here are some things that may set one company apart from another.

*Amount of emergency services coverage - how much will they pay to recover a sunk/disabled boat. Is it a set max or is it increasable
*Agreed value for atleast the first 3 yrs. If something were to happen, it would cover the loan amount and not just the "value" of the boat. Most people wont have equity in thier boat yet.
*Repair cost option - If you run over a stump 4 yrs from now, they will replace everything with new parts at 100% - deductible. they wont depreciate the parts due to age.
*For you I/O people - Varmint coverage. if the sob's eat through you bellows and sink your boat, will you be covered.

        Just a couple of thoughts.

also your liability limits play a factor.

I should also add that I doubt that your boat claim will effect the rates on your next policy.

Also consider a PUP. It is a cheap ( $300 or so a yr for 2 mill) way to give you increased liability coverage on and off the water and you wont have to carry so much on you home, car, boat. You will need to have all these policies with the same company.

Here in Canada, I'm sure it's a bit different than what you guys have available to you, but for what it's worth, I pay just over $800Cdn. for a year. That's with 3 million worth of liability that covers both the boat and people behind the boat. It covers any type of watersports that you may be doing(including those flying tube things, I think they are called stingrays, i asked this specifically). It also covers me on any inland water ways in Canada & the western US, offshore in and around Vancouver & Vancouver island, and if I want coverage for other parts of North America I just have to pay and extra $60 to bump up so I have coverage where ever I go.

I have my insurance through Boat US. They have a couple differant options and I found them to be cheaper than State Farm at least since I moved to Colorado. State Farm was cheaper when I lived in Illinois.

You can check out there info at boatus.com

They also offer recovery and towing service on and off the water.

I have been using Progressive and have been very pleased with their rates.

                          I got mine through Allstate

I actually thumbed throught that stupid booklet that they send you saying all the things that they won't cover and lots of it uses words so big you can't understand it. After reading it, you begin to beleive that if they wanted to, they could cry foul on anything and weasel their way out of paying...I am exaggerating, but it seemed to give me more questions than answers. I also got full replacement cost.

I have a PUP and they required me to get higher limits on my home in order to get it. I wouldn't argue with an Allstate guy over it, but I was unable to choose a lower limit for my homeowners policy, and let the PUP pick up the rest.

Anyway, I noticed that kiteboarding was specifically listed as an activity that was not covered. I just thought that was interesting.

Your are correct, Tall. You do have to carry a set minimum on your home and auto (which is higher then the state minimum) in order to take out a PUP.

Here is an example Of what I meant to help clarify my statement. It would cost 2x $$$ more to carry 500k liability on you home, then to have 100k on the home and a pick up 2mill PUP. When we come across this while quoting a new customer, we usually end up getting thier business by increasing thier coverage while dropping thier premium.

Same with the auto. You can save money by dropping from a 250k to a 100k and picking up a pup.

Advantage of a PUP.......it covers you every where.
