      Anyone venture a guess on the diesel fuel gph. Would you ever recover the initial cost? If not, what would be the advantage?

        I am going from memory here, but...

        For similar use, similar vessels, and similar powerplant displacement, the diesel motor being discussed will use, (from recollection, don't quote me on it) roughly half of the fuel when compared with a comparable gasoline powered rig. Again, this is from my memory; the true facts are sure to be different, but the diesel power plant is supposed to be a lot better in the GPH category.


        As for advantages, torque, and emissions are two immediate advantages that come to mind. From a safety standpoint, even with a fuel leak, there is no potential for an explosive vapor environment to develop in the motor box. Diesel is nowhere as volatile as gasoline, and is a much safer fuel from an explosion standpoint.
        It's not an optical illusion.
        It just looks like one.....

          From a maintenance standpoint are diesels easier/harder to work on than gas motors? Would the cost of service go up accordingly?

          15K$ seems like an awful lot for a diesel upgrade, you'd have to burn 10k gallons of fuel to make it pay for itself if you got it for the fuel savings (assuming gas is 3$/gal) That's a LOT of fuel!

            This is a good point and I might add that TIGE' of all boat I could see using a diesel because the hull is strong enough to handle it.

            I did a Diesel fuel emissions test with my son for a science project and using our five gas analyzer we found that Diesel was very clean burning compared to gasoline. I think a diesel boat would be pretty interesting. I am sure you could get Walter Drives to make a V-Drive for diesel.

              I would say from trying to work on my powerstroke, vs any gas engine it's a PITA!! granted I don't hardly due anything to my diesel, but when I have to it sucks!

                Yes, I have to agree with DOM it is a PITA compared to a gas Engine. But there is also some advantages.

                  another point to consider is that you can run (and make your own) biodiesel. B100 biodiesel produces 1/2 the carbon emissions that petroleum diesel does, no sulfer and roughly 1/3 the nitrogen emissions. Additionally, its a better lubricant, which reduces engine wear. All of this is in comparison to Ultra-low sulfur diesel, which is what is currently being sold at the pump, as of last year.

                      Then you can smell McDonalds French Fries instead of fumes.

                        also non-tax diesel is much easier to obtain. Why pay rod tax for use on the water.

                          another good point!

                          Not sure if you all know this, but diesel and biodiesel have higher BTU ratings than gasoline. In other words, they produce more heat when ignited. For this reason, it requires less fuel to produce the same amount of heat (and thus power, assuming all things remain constant).

                          Additionally, diesels do not preignite. In fact, they only combust under the right conditions. This is why you can run insane compression ratios and get absurd with the amount of boost you run in them.... whereas you have preignition problems with gasoline and alcohol.

                            i hate diesels, so what if they run cheaper and cleaner, its not like you are going to save any money unless you constantly use your boat all day everyday for like 10 years and dont change boat. they sound like crap too, constant ticking noise does my head in, my dad borrowed a diesel when his car was in for a service and i cant stand listening to them. i love the loud grumbling noise of our tige, good feeling when you are passing an I/O and you know they think your boat sounds and looks awesome. petrol rules IMHO

                              each to his own! I love the ticking noise and the sound of the turbo winding up. I'd take it any day, plus the new one's are much quieter, in fact more quiet then the gas engines IMO.
