We got evacuated on Monday morning about 11a, spent the night in a hotel room at the beach with 6 adults, 6 kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat and 1 rabbit...all in one room-fun, fun, fun! We we're able to get back into our house in Scripps Ranch (home of the 2004 fires) on Tuesday at about 3p and once again everything was fine. I turned around and left for work (police) at about 430p and am now working 14 hour shifts helping with more evacuations, city security (looters), etc. I packed up the wife and kids and sent them to San Francisco to stay with the grandparents, so that they could get away from all the smoke and truth be told it's one less thing for me to worry about.
Overall the local, state and federal response has been incredible-I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks! People are doing what they're supposed to do and the amount of support is amazing-everybody is really taking care of each other. The fires are still out of control and evacuations are on-going, but the winds are finally starting to die down!
When all is said and done...a couple of days at the river (even if it's getting colder) with an ice chest full of beer and water that looks like butter, will be just what the doctor ordered!

Head for the river or better yet, Lake Mead. Hopefully all of the smoke hasn't blown inland. Unfortunately, with the Santa Ana's dying down, now all of the smoke will just hang around in the basin. What you need is a strong onshore wind with a good rainstorm behind it to clean it all out, then you will have one of those beautiful picturesque clear days where you can see the Hollywood sign from Rancho Palos Verdes.
I grew up in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Good luck guys. So far, we've been spared this kind of disaster here in Texas (knock on wood). But, it's always a possibility and we've come pretty close some times.
It's good to see that everyone takes the danger seriously.Cursed by a fortune cookie: "Your principles mean more to you than any money or success."
