So, it's really up to the dealer to help you make the right choice for your area. I know FIC does this because in his area it's pretty much required.

Here in Texas, it's really never been an issue unless you have the type of flooding we had this year where all that debris washes into the lake. When that happens, it will completely clog your intake and you will run the impeller dry. By the time you overheat, you'll have fried your impeller.

Having said that, it sounds like it would be a good idea to have some type of strainer in front of the tranny/v-drive cooler, since debris is likely to get stuck there, unlike your engine block/exhaust manifolds.

I installed a raw water strainer & Gano filter before this season and put 45 hours on it this year. Our lakes are fairly clean. I got twigs, string, leaves and small bark pieces in the strainer. There were 2 gumstick size pieces of cardboard in the trans cooler when I reworked the hoses to install it. The Gano coolant hose filter is inside the raw water pump outlet hose. It was covered with seeds. It's there to stop chunks of impeller blade from getting in the trans cooler/block (knock wood).

read somewhere on the site about overheating due to getting debris in the water intake. This happened to us the other day. Had to take the hose loose from the oil cooler and backwash every thing in order to finish out the day. When I got home I pulled the floor hatch out to get at all the plumbing to see how it was routed. I am soooooooooo pissed at TIGE for not installing a very simple and relatively inexpensive sea strainer in the intake before it ever gets to the transmission. It woulf be serviceable through the hatch in the rear seat. I ordered mine today and will post some pics when I get it installed. Since I live in Texas within a 3 hour drive you can bet that TIGE will be hearing from me. Well I've whined enough please let me know how many have had the same problem.

sorry to hear about your misfortune, however the sea stariner has been an option on our boats for the past 5-6 years. Some dealers do order them on the boats and if ordered we will install. The reason this is an option rather than a standard item is not everyone wants this included in the cost of the boat.
