    Trailer brakes locking up

    Hey guys,

Recently my trailer brakes have been locking up when I am backing up. This is very annoying and I can not seem to figure out the cause. I have an extreme trailer which I am assuming is an 02 since it came with the boat. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

You do have your plug in right?

Quick, double check the connector to the reverse selonoid on your trailer. Also make sure the fuse on your truck / suv is still ok for the reverse output on the plug. If the rest of you lights work ok, your ground to the trailer should be good. I suppose the selonoid could be bad...You could check with an ohm meter.. I'm not sure what the coil resistance should be but, if it reads open theres a problem.....

You should be using a 5 wire plug.
The fifth wire (I believe the color is whit) should be tied into your back up lights.

Make sure that when you put the truck into reverse, that you get 12vdc from ground to this wire.

You can plug the plug in backwards and turn on your running lights to unlock the brakes.
(This will completely disengage your brakes, and none of the lights on the trial will work. SO DO NOT TOW THE TRAILER THIS WAY.
        Hope this helps

The backup wire on mine is blue.

That would be correct Tall, blue is the standard for the reverse solenoid. I had the exact same issue and it was the the fuse under the hood for trailer brakes.

I had the same problem when I first got my boat... The guy who wired my trailer lights didn't bother to wire it up correctly and I couldn't go anywhere that I couldn't back up... This obviously cramped my style for launching my boat... But once I remedied the situation I never had a problem again...

Check fises; have someone put it in reverse while you check the solenoid; get a bolt to use as a lockout.

Would a 2002 model have a backup solenoid?
It could be the old key in the slot type.

Our 2000 Extreme uses the blue 5th wire for a solenoid.
If it's not hooked up it's only a problem backing up a hill.
I had to add the wire to our '85 Class C backup lights.

Ok, sounds good. I changed my older drum brakes for the new disc brakes and your right about backing up.
                        They really lock up!

I have a 2000 21i w/ a dorsey trailer. Just behind the hitch on the underside there is a latch that I can push up if my brakes lock up, or at least this is what the book says it is for. I have never had it happen. I always make sure I push it before I leave the house though just in case.

On my 2004 Prestige trailer you can not back up with out getting out and flipping you wire harness and turning on you lights. They told me that all prestige trailera are this way. When I say flipping I mean in normal driving you have all five pins connected, when getting ready to back up you have to get out and disconnect the harness and flip it and reconnect just four pins then turn on you lights and back up.

Its kind of a pain but it is a nice safety feature. Maybe your trailer is the same way.
