When living in Hawaii, we were diving and were at 85 feet below the surface on a sunken ship. We attempted to go into the ship only to retreat because there was a 7 foot white tip reef shark trying to exit. The shark missed me and my buddy by 2-4 feet but that was exciting. That same diving, my friend decided to cut his leg with the coral (yes, the blood was green) with that same shark swimming around.
We always dived with sharks (smaller white tips) and green sea turtles without thinking twice about them going after us.
They can be if you are invading their territory. However, he was attempting to eat salmon and you didn't pose as a danger. They are a very playful animal as the web link that you provided states.
When I was about 17, I was surfing in Ventura at a place called California St. It was a week day, and was almost alone. I loved surfing, but being a member of the jaws generation, I was never fully comfortable. One day, I was dropping in on a 5-6ft wave, and I saw a large dorsal fin and a grey shape next to me. I have never had fear like that. I LITERALLY sh*t in my pants. Salt water brown trout. It made me shake and I fell off my board. Wave tumbled me, and I thought I was going to get eaten, got my head up and it was a dolphin.
A similar occurance happened to me when I was young and surfing in Southern California, although I wasn't alone. When you see a fin, before you realize it's a dolphin, it is pretty alarming and people are on the move really fast.
There is exactly 0% chance I would have jumped back in that water!!
That's insane! I don't even like the weeds hitting my feet.
Yep that is the way I would have been. No way no how would I have got back in the river. Now I don't know that I will even make a trip to the river. I use fresh water activities for a reason. This is one of them.
