Something strange happened to me yesterday

So we went boarding in the sac river yesterday. Water was a cool 64 and the sun was out. It was a nice day.

So I was the first one in the water. Well I ended up falling and I notice that all my friends were standing up pointing at me and yelling. I wasn't sure what was wrong. Then it happened. Out of nowhere. This huge black head pops up out of the water and just stares me down. I froze up. Didn't know what to do. Then i realized it was a seal. A big seal! we just looked at each other for a second and I wasn't sure what to do. So I just sat there. It made a noise as if it was trying to tell me something, then it dove under water and bumped me.

I'm sure it wasn't trying to hurt me. But it did give me a good shove. Then it came back up and jumped out of the water and back in. Having the feeling like there was a shark or something underneath me it kind of freaked me out.

I ended up boarding some more and saw it 3 more times. Felt like it was following us. The last we saw it came up to the boat and bumped the back then took off.

later I found out that it was a seal and they are looking for salmon in the river this time of year. Crazy. I never knew such sea animals could come up that far and live in fresh water for that matter.

Does anyone know if they can be harmful to humans?

You will be okay. Seals are very playful and will stay away from humans for the most part. How do I know this??? Being a former SCUBA PADI Instructor, I have encountered a few in my diving life.

I would be a little more afraid of those brown trouts that might be floating down the river.

Seals and Sharks go all the way up the Mississippi as far as St. Louis. I think there was a Manatee lost up there just this year. Talk about wierd. Bull Sharks are vicious things. They will do more than just bump you.

it was the Memphis Manatee, and the news saw him for several days, but when sea world arrived to help save him, all of a sudden he couldnt be found then he turned up dead

I will be going out again Monday if the weather is not too cold. Good to know that they are not aggressive. Though I think they are not seals and they are fresh water otters. So I hear. None the less it was very strange to see one of these things in my face.
I going to bring the camera and see if I can catch one in a snap shot.

I wonder what else can swim up here. Hopefully not SHARKS!

There is exactly 0% chance I would have jumped back in that water!!
That's insane! I don't even like the weeds hitting my feet.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

A seal or an otter wouldn't scare me. Would you be too scared to swim with dolphins too?
