Not everyone who gets a scope bite is stupid. but that guy was definitely out of his league.
My niece drew a bull elk tag last year. She was 14 years old and somewhat small. She has fired guns, but as expected, this was really a hunt Dad wanted, and she did not have a ton of experience. They found a nice bull and she was able to lean against a tree and squeeze off a round. Kaboom! She hits the elk and it goes down. The scope bites her above the eye, and blood starts streaming heavily. She complains that she cannot see out of that eye, more than just the dripping blood. The shot is just a little low and to the front, injuring the front shoulder of the bull, and now he gets up and starts to walk away. The family starts telling her to shoot! shoot! She is screaming: I can't see! She is in a panic that she is maimed for life and the bull is getting away. I don't know for sure who ended up shooting the bull, but they did bring it down quickly and fill her tag. Once the dust had settled, they discovered that the impact had knocked her contact lens out of the eye, and she is nearly blind without them, so it was just a simple scope injury.
It is a better story to tell in person, but you get the idea...she is screaming about her eyesight, blood everywhere, and then the bull starts walking away, and you see where Dad's true priorities are.Be excellent to one another.
