Quick and dirty fix

I have been having problems with my boat not being able to turn right, it reaches a certain point and starts to "slip" at the helm. Of course there is a 2 week wait to take to the dealers, so I am trying to fix it on my own. I took the helm apart and need to order in a new rotary helm and will probably replace the cable as well. However, I have a boating trip planned next week so I can't wait. It appears as though the cable has worn down the plastic sleeve on the inside and is allowing the cable to slip because of too much space. Oddly, it only occurs when turning right, so I think that only one side is wearing down. So here is my quick and dirty fix, I cleaned out all the old grease and applied new grease. I added small washers as spacers to take up the extra space. It seems to be working out of the water, hopefully it will work with fully ballasted boat in the water.

PS If anybody knows the length of cable for a 2300V or 23V, let me know.

If I read your pic correctly the helm part no. is 310742, same as ours. The tech support guy at Teleflex (they bought out Morse in 2001) told me our Morse Tilt Rotary Command 290 helm is no longer made. The Morse style cables are still available and the length is printed on the casing in this format: 304411-xxx (xxx = inches). The Teleflex equivalent is: SSC52xx (xx = feet). They make a replacement helm, Teleflex Safe-T QC Single Dash Module SH1535094 with tilt that he said requires very little if any modification to install. It does not use our old Morse cables. The Teleflex cables are a QC II SSC61xx (xx = feet).

Moki - no I haven't replaced our cable or helm. Our boat is 7 years old, but it only has 91 hours. We got it last Oct. I did replace the cable & helm on our last boat. It had a Morse rotary helm and I put in a Teleflex rack. The cable had a hernia and I decided to upgrade. The rack was nice for a sterndrive because it had the anti-torque feature. That's not really needed with a rudder. The rack was 4 turns lock-to-lock, while the rotary's are usually 3 turns. A rack would not fit under the dash in our 21V & I like the 3 turns of the rotary. If (when) I need to change the steering cable I'll consider upgrading the helm and using the latest Teleflex cable design. We love our new(er) boat and plan on keeping it awhile.

I can't read the length of our cable without taking it apart.
What year is your 23V?
What cable lengths are people using for the 2000 21V and the 23V?
A cable length chart for all the boats might be nice.

I will be replacing mine after this trip. I already bought the parts (I found one locally). I can tell already that I am going to have to drill new holes and tilt my rotary helm a little to get it to fit next to the stereo. I will keep you updated when I do it.

I think that cable length and type would be an awesome addition to the specificiations on the forum.
