    The Tige Questionaire: Your takes:

    We just got the questionaire.
For those who have owned more than one Tige in the past:

How do you like the Marine Power as compaired to the former Merc Powerplants?

    #2
I like my Merc powerplant, but I will say that certain design aspects are extremely puzzling. I think their design guys need to spend some time with the dealer service managers. Same holds true for the Tige engineers. You damn near have to pull the engine on a V-Drive to do anything beyond routine maintenance.

Can you explain further? The engine access doesn't look much different than my old I/O.

I used to be a Merc coolaid drinker. I have a pontoon boat that has a 40 hp o/b and my old Tige had a black scorpion. I believe they have been surpassed by other brands such as Honda and M/P. You get a chevy no matter what brand but things like impellers and electronics are very different I am happier with my new motor in my 07 20 V.
If I can be of any help at all, your in deep doo doo!

Marine Power is down the road from me, so I feel a little obligated. They started off in the Gulf Commercial industry, so reliability is one of the roots of the company. No one wants to be stranded in the Gulf, which is #3 worst for weather behind the North Sea and off Alaska. Many of the reliability features on engines first on M/P.....things like dual belts, EFI, and dual filtering.

If you go over and read the impeller thread, I think the newer MP engines make simple maintenance easy for the owner as well, even on V-drives.

Ok, take a look where the impeller is located...that's right, behind the engine down low so you have to be a contorsionist to reach it. Same thing for the fuel pressure regulator and cooler. It's behind a piece of plastic that requires you to remove the muffler before you can get to it.

The problem is that an inboard motor needs to be put in backwards when it's in a V-Drive. Consequently, all the easy to access stuff in the front of the engine is now impossible to get to. Furthermore, the way these engines sit in the V-Drive compartment, the exhaust system really gets in the way of everything. I have to believe that someone could take this into account before they drop these babies into a boat.

You hit it on the head there Dog! That is the BIGGEST reason i like DD boats, it's a breeze to work on 'em. I do all my own work that i can and it would drive me insane to have to fight around that compartment!

I absolutely LOVE my Black Scorpion engine. It runs hard, fast and smooth. My brother-in-law rented a Tigé this summer with the MP engine, and it ran as smooth as a Harley engine (remember it's a rental, so it's probably not the best maintained boat). I could tell the difference in acceleration between the two, and it seemed to have a noticeable difference in power. Just my opinion, I am by no means an expert.

dogbert - do your side panels not come out on your boat? When I took my panel out it looked like I had all the access in the world. The impeller on my boat is pretty easy to access and only needs a straight slot screwdriver to pull the cover off from what Lee said. I think Tige and Marine Power are getting better as time goes on.

Replacing the impeller is much easier on our 05 380hp MP than on our 00 315 hp Merc. The MP is also easier for filter removal. Thats about it for my maintenance other than changing the antifreeze. TigeAZ does the rest. MP is the one for me.
Sorry Razz, but I don't like that big box in the middle of my dance floor. I do envy you though when it is time to do a little work on the engine.

Don't worry it's probably short lived anyway. The wife wants a V and i've pretty much figured out that next season is the last for the old girl.

Don't wait! Once you get the green light, you'd better run with it, boy! Remember the women's perogative...could be bad news for you.

That's what my dealer told me also. They really like the MP 340. They feel like it's the most reliable powerplant out there. They felt like the 380 and 400 were not worth the price, but they'd be happy to sell it to me.
