All this electronics - I just want to ski!

Is it just me? All this electronic stuff is starting to get to me.

Electronic fuel injection - that's fine, more power, better fuel economy, more test tools. The fuel pumps still seem to die as often and there's still water in the gas.

Computer controlled engine - that's fine, too, more power, better fuel economy, even more test tools and OBTW the ECM for the 350 Mag MPI is discontinued. What happens if my ECM dies? Park it?

"Limp home" mode (subset of above) - what braniac came up with this? It's ok if you're on the freeway and need to get to an offramp, but what do you do when there's a 12 mph wind in the main channel and you're drifting toward the rocks at the base of the dam? There should be an override. I don't care how large the cloud of unburned gas is behind my boat, I reeeally don't like rocks.

Throttle by wire - maybe if I was flying a 787 or a space shuttle I might want that. This is just asking for trouble.

Perfect Pass - awesome! (it even has a computer) This is a must have. No negatives, at least until it breaks. You will be hounded to death until it is fixed.

iPods/MP3 players hooked into a theater quality system - cool, until some rapper has some rather foul language that I don't want my kids to hear from across the lake.

GPS - interesting toy. Does it really matter if your'e going 42 or 44 mph? You want to make this useful? Put it every boat with a transponder. Connect it to the computer/controls and it could keep all those morons who don't know how to drive away from you. Provide an override, of course, for your friends or if you breakdown (the odds are increasing).

Actually, more electronics usually means better reliability. I just had my fuel pressure regulator go out on me. Fortunately, my engine went into alarm mode or they never would have found it. My mechanic told me of a customer who tore his whole engine down looking for the same problem on a Baja.

dogbert - do you have the 350 Mag MPI? Was the regulator problem the same one where you were getting the engine monitor system beeping while cruising at 3200 rpm? There must be a pressure sensor in the line somewhere for the engine monitor system. (Side Note: There is a seperate temp sensor for the engine monitor system on the thermo housing.) You probably can see that pressure drop with a mechanical gauge, but it would not be wise to have the engine cover open at that speed. A dash mounted electrical fuel pressure gauge would be better.

I've been looking over the wiring harness schematic for the 350 Mag MPI and I don't see a fuel pressure sensor. I wonder what made the engine monitoring system go off? Maybe the knock sensor. If the fuel pressure was too low at high rpm maybe the engine was knocking continuously because it was too lean.
