I drove in an X-45 today!

I debated about even starting this thread, but thought that I would give my experience.

A friend of mine (who makes more than I do) bought a new 2007 MC X-45. He invited me out this morning and we wakeboarded around a little. He got a deal on it at around 70K or so since it was the end of the year. I asked him why he didn't go talk to my Tige dealer and he said: UHMM, I dunno. I think he just had extra cash to burn so he went straight with the most expensive he could find.

    A few random thoughts:

The tower: very nice, very solid, the swing in board racks are the shizzle. The bimini fit nice and was overall a huge bonus.

The tower stereo: 4 cans put out more sound than I have heard from any other 4 can system. When I rode, he hadn't exactly figured out how to turn it up so I had to ride without it, but had him turn it up when I was in the parking lot leaving and he was still on the lake...very impressive for four cans. And they look good on the tower.

Overall the fit and finish was very nice. The boat has a very solid feel to it and the seats are comfortable. The bow is huge, like another cockpit all by itself.

It turned very well once going, but was a big slug at idle speeds.

Handled double ups like they hardly existed, probably even better than my 24V.

I had to leave before they surfed. My friend was able to let go of the rope with 4 people in the boat and just stock ballast. He said it was a very average wave and could not move around in the pocket or he would fall out.

The wakeboarding wake was nice. With the Trimtab up, you needed to go 23 MPH to make a decent wake, or it foamed up. I was able to go at 21.5 with just a hint of the wake falling over on top with the trim tab most of the way down. We discovered that things were better at 22 MPH (of course after I got done). It seemed that going from inside the wake to outside had a better pop than going from the outside in. The main problem was that if you went wake to wake, and came up short, you hit this rock solid steep ramp and it would jolt your teeth out.

My biggest complaint was that this wake could not be made usable by beginners, the speed has to be too fast, the abrupt inner lip of the wake is terrible if you land just short on a wake to wake jump. For that reason, I could not have one.

There is a real ski pylon.

The vinyl does not seem to heat up to 180 degrees in the desert sun.

The storage up front was cavernous. The rear storage hatches are unimpressive. I MIGHT be able to get the 5 man water weenie in there. My tige has that, a ballast bag and another 3 man tube in the rear storage hatch.

The 8.1 liter engine has a nice low grumble to it and got the boat on plane nicely. I just would not want to have to fill that 90 gallon tank.

    A pic or two.

Notice the center walkway. That was sort of cool to me. made for a nice place to sit on the back of the boat.

The red stripe and the swimstep are red metal flake. I think that is very cool, takes me back to my fishing days, back when I had a mullet .

Wow! Thanks for the report. I originally started looking at the X-45 and fell in love with it. The tower and racks like you said are just awesome! The vinyl seems to be a lot nicer than Tige's as well. They really are nice boats and at $70k he got a pretty sweet deal (in relative terms). I looked for used one's at had trouble finding any at that price.

Awesome write up! How were the strapless, clamp-style board racks? Did they hold the boards nice and snug? I've been wondering about that since I saw them.. they look sweet without the cords/bungees!
If you ain't falling.. you ain't trying hard enough..

I have to say that MC's towers and racks are by far the best on the market.
So easy to use and the are rock solid.

What about the handling? Did it handle the turns better at speed or cruise any better than your 24V???

We looked the X-45 and Bu 247 hard. We chose the Tige, and it was nice saving the money, but we would have bought the others over the 24Ve if we liked it better. There were things we liked better about each one. My wife loved the huge bow of the 45, I loved the huge cockpit of the 247, and there were other things. But in the end, the Tige had the best balance for us, and I feel good about my choice.

I do love the racks on the MC, no rubber cords, that would be awesome.

I would love to see an RZ4, with 18 people capacity, and more of a lounge bow like the Ve.

I think the handling at speed was pretty much the same as my 24V. It seemed to turn quickly for a boat of its size (same as mine). It did not do as well at slow speeds, like when close maneuvering to pick up a downed rider or at the dock, it felt like a really big unresponsive boat then. The tranny is quieter than mine, and the boat did not move when I put it in gear (had to give it a little juice to give it a nudge), so that took some getting used to.

I think the 70K was definitely the price before taxes. It wouldn't surprise me if 70K actually means 'in the 70's'. Still probably a good deal at that. My understanding is that MC does not make boats based on the dealers' orders, they simply decide how many to make and make them. So the best time to buy one for 07 is now, but you risk they are all gone by now in some models by doing that.

Like I said, the racks are awesome. Strapped racks now seem to me like a horse and buggy.

My neighbor has an X-star 06 with the clamp stile racks. My kids 10 & 12 can't release em. As the racks get older they get harder to operate.
If I can be of any help at all, your in deep doo doo!

Well, I just found out I was pretty misinformed. I guess he was quoting 70 + for a model with no options. After adding the options...are you ready for this...106K

So then he got a smokin' deal and paid 90K out the door.

Does that jive with what others have heard?

I'll keep my scalding hot vinyl, thank you.

I can see where younger people and probably many women couldn't release the clamps easily. I think there has to be a better design out there somewhere. If they got stiff after time (just one year!), then that is a definite problem.

22 feet for $60K.... Well, I think I will keep mine. I know would have a bigger party boat with more people to party with. Doesn't sound like he is going to party too much....
