    22Vé Fuel Leak

    Just wanted to see if anyone else has encountered a similar problem..

    Went to the lake yesterday after work and before going we filled up. We have an '07 22Ve w/ the dual fuel fills. We always fill from the port side (the one w/ the fuel vent right under it) but open both sides to help vent. Anyways we filled up yesterday and headed to the lake. When I got in the boat I noticed a fairly strong fuel smell but thought it was just b/c we had just filled up. Ran across the lake at WOT to try and burn a lil gas to get the smell to go away.

    We got to the other side of the lake and I surfed for about 20 min and then got back in the boat. Still noticed a VERY strong smell of fumes. Opened the engine compartment and I could see some sort of fluid at the bottom of the hull, below the engine. I thought it was just water but the fumes were so strong that I thought I better check. I grabbed out flag and stuck the wooden handle down into the bottom of the compartment and sure enough.. the liquid was raw fuel!

    Immediately drove back to the dock and headed home. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a fuel leak problem in their boats..

    I'm 99% sure that there is a leak somewhere in the starboard side fill line b/c as the boat sat overnight, no more fuel ended up in the bottom and the gas gauge didnt drop at all. I think we were just pumping gas in to the bottom of the boat via a leak in the hose. Took it to the dealer this morning and they are checking it out but was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts/opinions/past experiences..

    That sucks... Was it the first time you filled the tank up from that side????

      IMO I wouldnt have run the boat at all with fuel in the bilge thats how they blow up

        No we filled up once before from that side right after we got it. We seem to have the "fuel blowout" problem more from that side which is why we always fill from the port.

        Ya we were going back and forth on this a bunch. We had the blower on and the engine cover up for like 20 minutes while we were trying to figure out what was going on. The problem was there weren't many people on the lake and the sun was going down. It would have taken hours and hours to paddle back to the dock and the gates close at 10pm so we probably would have ended up spending the night. We had been running it for about 45 min before we even noticed it so we just prayed for another 10.. There wasn't a ton of gas in the bottom, only a little bit. (I know I know fumes ignite) So we limped back and shut her down.

          I wonder if it happened the last time you went out after fueling the starboard side and you just didn't notice it.....

            I was wondering this also but I came to the conclusion that there is NO WAY we wouldn't have noticed. The fume smell while we were drying off the boat and trailer after we pulled it out was SO STRONG that I was coughing inside as I was wiping down the seats. You could smell them from about a 5' radius around the engine compartment (outside the boat) and all the way up to the bow (inside the boat).

            The reason I think it is a starboard side leak is b/c we filled up Monday from the port side and had no problems. 2 days later filled from the starboard and

              ASSOCIATE PRESS HOUSTON - Sept. 2003 - Three people were injured when a yacht exploded on Galveston Bay shortly after the craft was refueled.

              One man was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital following the blast Saturday night. Another man and woman were taken by ambulance to area hospitals.

              The blast occurred between Kemah and Seabrook after the yacht, possibly a 38-footer, refueled with gasoline, said Capt. David Huston of Towboat/U.S. Clear Lake.

              He said the yacht's occupants called his company to bring gasoline because they had run out and Capt. Harvy Bagley took them gas around 9 p.m.

              Minutes after filling up, the boat exploded, sending debris as much as 60 feet from the boat, said Huston.

              "It was just a major explosion with debris everywhere," he told the Houston Chronicle in Sunday's editions.

              Bagley, who circled the blast site in search of the occupants, rescued all three and took them to a boat slip. The man taken by air appeared to have two broken legs, Huston said.

                Well I just called my dealer and he said the boat is ready to pick up! I guess it was a gasket on the port side. Not sure where the gasket was or why it leaked but when I go pick it up tonight I will find out.

                Should we have driven it? Maybe not. How unsafe was it? I honestly don't know.. I'm pretty sure that it has to be a pretty freak accident for a boat to blow up from fumes in the first place. I mean I doubt that everyone that owns a boat follows the sticker every single time they start up. The warning sticker says to use your blower for 4-5 minutes and then lift up the motor cover and check the engine compartment for fumes. Technically if you don't do that then you are running the risk of the fumes igniting every time you start your engine..

                  Got to ride in a helicopter for the first time tho

                      That's what I'm saying! Well at least we didn't blow up and we all made it back safe..

                      Now I'm wondering if it was something they messed up when they replaced the fuel sending unit a few weeks ago. Our fuel gauge never worked from the factory so they replaced the sending unit and now it works great. However before they replaced it we filled up from the starboard side w/ no problems.. after they replaced it we filled up from the starboard side and we had a leak..

                              Wow! So are you saying that your bilge area exploded and you got to ride in a life line helicopter to the hospital?
