Y, I write software for a bunch of photographers, and a photog mag. So I went to the editor and also the ceo of the mag to get advice for which to buy. They both said Canon Rebel XT as a starter, hands down.
Because of this, and other relationships, I have alot of stuff. Photoshop CS3 is the best for editing, but its a steep curve. I also got Apple Aperture for free from apple, and Adobe Lightroom from adobe. These are great, because they are photo managers. For managing lots of images, mainly for pro photographers. They are liked suped up iphoto or adobe ps elements.
It depends on your skill level. Start with ps elements on the pc or iphoto on the mac. If you are on a mac, iphoto is fantastic. If you have a huge library, and want to step up, try lightroom on the pc, but Aperture on the mac is the bomb, and what I use. I make these web proof sites in minutes when I come off the water with aperture.:
Thanks for sharing your experience with the weight distribution.
I think many of us tend to generalize what works for our boats to other models that behave differently.
I agree that if you put a lot of weight in the front, you cannot then use the full capacity of the TAPS to raise the bow when you want it. That makes sense.
I can get a very nice surf wake with just 400 pounds in the starboard locker, but I need at least double that to get a decent wake on the port side. Makes me wish I was goofy.
I am going to rethink my weight distribution for surfing. I keep putting weight in the front because people tell me it will help, but frankly, I think that my experience is going to be the same as yours...more in the back the better.
That is cool. I have just recently been bitten by the Camera "bug" just like your daughter. I bought a Canon Rebel XTI, used it in Hawaii at the Pipeline Masters surf competition last December, took over 1,000 pics and fell in love with it. I have a polarizing filter that really makes the clarity come out in the pictures.
I have been looking into a new camera and the CANON has been in my sights for about a year.
