Sounds like maybe the amp to the tower speakers was cutting out? Overheating? But there is no way you would get delay or echo. The amps in the boats are still Kicker amps. Wet Sounds speakers.
Just remember that a speaker only plays what it is fed. So if the speakers are cutting out, it is because the amp is overheating. If there is distortion, it is usually caused by a clipped signal off an amplifier. Unfortunately for us, the speakers always get the bad wrap. When they just happen to be at the end of the line and what people wind up hearing.
I will talk with Tige and see if they have heard anything about what your friend heard. But it sounds like the only thing it could be is the tower speaker amp was over heating and going into protection. If this happens and it comes on and off. Then I could see how you buddy could call it an echo.
