I tried using my perfect pass for the first time wakeboarding this weekend. Had it set for 21, pulling a 6'2" 250 pounder. It kept surging from 18mph to 28 mph. I finally disengaged it, and pulled my rider manually. Any ideas why it would surge like that?

Good afternoon! I have an '04 21i and I have PP WBP. I LOVE IT! I have heard mostly bad stuff about the Accuset.........but I won't go into that now. When I bought mine I was all ready to use it and when we did it had the same problems. Luckily 2 days after picking my boat up we had a PRO come up and give us lessons. He was very familiar with PP and he "calibrated" mine to keep the tightest pull possible. Plus for wakeboarding we NEVER use SPEED.....we use RPM's. It keeps a more "constant" pull then the speed setting. Now your speed may vary .5-.7 mph........but you will hardly notice b/c the boat is keeping that constant pull with the RPM. None of us like using speed b/c of the surge of the motor trying to maintain that exact speed. Hope some of that makes sense.............The manual tells you some of the settings that you need to adjust to keep it tight. I can also check mine and you could adjust your settings to where mine are set. Let me know. Cheers, Brandon

I've experienced this before, and there is likely nothing wrong w/your Perfect Pass. Given your rider's size and the range that it was surging, it sounds as if you may have pulled him up quickly and ran well past the 21 mph set point. If that happens, the range eventually diminshes and finally locks in at your set point, i.e. 18-28, 19-26, 20-24, 21-22, 21 even.
My Perfect Pass works perfectly when the driver does a moderate pull out and stops accelerating about 3 mph short of the set speed, i.e. if set for 21, increase steadily to about 18, and then PP takes over and beeps to signal that it's set. PP often will run past the set speed by 1 or 2 mph, but settles in to the set speed very quickly.
Once you get the hang of the starts, you'll love Perfect Pass. It's not referred to as the 'marriage-saver' for nothing!

I think mine is the PP, but it came stock on my '06. I'll double check that tonight. I may have pulled him up past 21 initially, I will try slowing my acceleration near 21 to see. He is a big dude, and he dug in pretty deep initially, so when he came out of the hole my boat rapidly accelerated.

If I remember right, in 06, Tige only offered the Accu-Set and Marine Power set up but your dealer could have ordered w/out and installed PP.
If you do have Accu-Set, when it takes over and the red light goes solid, you need to put the throttle down to WOT or it will surge.Mikes Liquid Audio: Knowledge Experience Customer Service you can trust-KICKER WetSounds ACME props FlyHigh Custom Ballast Clarion LiquidLumens LEDs Roswell Wave Deflector And More

Got the Accu-Set and love it. No problems except the unit was dead from the beginning and it took 3 months to get it fixed. Finally talked the Tech into swiping one from another boat in stock. Zad is right. The PP can be set for how often it checks the speed. If you have it set to check the speed too rarely (every 3 seconds), then it makes adjustments that get wild. It can be set to check the speed more often, and that will decrease the swings in speed. The owner's manual should tell you how to do that. Mine was initially set to check the speed too rarely, and I fixed it and have never had one complaint. I don't even have to mess with the throttle on a double up.
I have never had a problem with the speed based mode. I can't help but think that once a person pulls hard on my boat and slows it down, if the RPM's are held stable, it will take 5-10 seconds or more to get it back to the speed we like. It would take even longer with heavy ballast. I have never tried it in RPM mode, but it just does not make sense to me.Be excellent to one another.

I'd also check to make sure the PP is correctly calibrated for the engine. There's some settings around that if you don't have them set correctly, then you could have problems.
The only other thing to check is the tensioner. It tells you how to do that in the manual.
If you're still having issues, call up the folks at PerfectPass. They have pretty good customer service.Cursed by a fortune cookie: "Your principles mean more to you than any money or success."
