Can a bilge pump burn out?

Yesterday, I was in the water trying to help my girlfriend get up on a surfboard. I told my buddy driving to turn on the blower. He turned on the bilge. It was on for twenty minutes or so and obviously wasn't pumping water. Do you think any damage was done to it? Thanks guys.

Yes they burn out though running it dry probably didn't hurt anything.

It means the motor brushes are still good. The impellers on them are usually made out of plastic or a fairly durable material so they aren't as likely to burn up. If nothing else, break out the hose and fill your bilge up in the driveway.

My wife let ours run for 1 hour. When we got home I put some water in the bilge and turned it on and it worked no problem.

            I've owned 11 new boats.
I would recon at least half of them had burn't out pumps.
