PVC film from trailer guide posts

Does anyone get the PVC streaks on your hull from the plastic tops of the trailer guide posts? Every so often I get these long streaks that look like scratches. I can remove them with my fingernail and peel them off but it’s often time consuming and it’s just another thing I have to spend time on. I was looking for some sort of cleaner of any way of removing them quickly. I usually have my pads high enough so they are covering the tops but every so often they get bumped down.

I used to get these before I got the soft guide post covers. That pretty much took care of the problem.

Are you just talking about the foam covers or something else?

Yes, mine cover the entire PVC guide post, but my trailer's older like yours.

Where did you get trailer pads that cover the whole PVC? My PVC poles sticks through the top of the pads and I will occasionally get some scratches from it.

I used to get those before we reworked the trailer guides and ground down the RR screw heads.

I have thought about dipping the PVC caps in that liquide rubber stuff just to give a little more protection.

I'm not sure where to get them besides a hardware store but isn't there a cap that you can put on them that isn't PVC. If it is PVC, it is a very, very soft PVC mixture?

why cant you just cut off the cap?? if you have the pads on there, they will still float. File the egdes down so there are no sharper edges.

If you cut off the cap, the pads will rise above the cut off area. Now, it would take some time to do this but those pads float and do rise and fall with some effort. The cap allows for a block to keep the pads at level.

yeah, I have my pads attached to the pvc so they dont inadvertanly fly away when I'm cruisin down the freeway. Because they are attached, they actually float up.

I don't have the caps and my pads will float up, but it does create a problem if the ramp is not steep and the pads do not float, then the top of the PVC bar will leave marks.

Found it. They are called plastic end caps. Here is the website that I found it on: http://www.stockcap.com/pvc-caps.html

I got these on my last boat until I put foam guide pole covers on. I also bought a 10ft lenght of PVC and made new, longer guide poles. That kept the cap from hitting the boat if the angle was bad.

When I did get these rubs, I would use the edge of a credit card and a constant stream of water to LIGHTLY scrape the pvc off. You have to really watch your angle and pressure. One side of the card was more rounded than the others. I had a black boat and the PVC would come off with time using this method.
