    Installing LED's on a trailer

So I have a tailight out on my trailer. I am considering adding a little bling and putting some LED's in, instead of the traditional lights. The LED's are purported to last longer, and they for sure are brighter and look classier.

I looked them up on West marine and found some that will fit perfect in the current trailer cutouts. They come with chrome or rubber grommets.

The problem is that I noticed that the price of $40 seemed a little steep, compared to 6 bucks to get a replacement at my local Auto Zone. Then I noticed that it did not specify per pair, and I called them. They are $40 each. I am not sure they are worth $80. What do you guys think?

maybe contact extreme if that is the trailer you have. I know they are running leds on everything now.
I personally like the clear leds that turn red when you hit the brakes. looks real slick

Had a chance to do a little surfing. Ebay has several pair for pretty cheap, but they are 6 inches instead of 6.5.

Jim, thanks for finding that for me.

On some of the LED lights, they will not have the three wire plug but just a three wire pigtail that you would have to do some cutting and slicing with.

We've been changing out all our trailer lites to LED.
Our new Extreme will come with them.

The more LEDs in the fixture, the worse reliability you'll have.
The fewer LEDs in the fixture the better.
We bought ours off E bay, and LED is the only way to go.

Seems no one makes a very good bulb type fixture.

Go LED. Forget bulb type anymore, especially on boat trailers.

              Ebay
The problem with regular trailer lights is they get to hot.
After staying in a long line to launch your boat. The lenses are very hot.
Now back into the cold water, and crack. Now the stop working. LED’s will not get hot. And should out last the trailer. Very very easy to install on your trailer.

I got mine from E-bay here are a few I found.
( I like the one with 62leds, that the one I have and it is very bright)
It will take less then 20 min for complete job.

I paid $32 a pair for mine on eBay from this guy; Closer To Wholesale. You do have to splice them in but no big deal.

Thanks RAZZ, Just bought them. For some reason they did not show up on my initial search. I will be sure to post pics when they are in.

Splicing a few wires does not bother me at all. After doing much of my own stereo work, I find it kind of fun.

I got my LEDs at Autozone, it seems like they were only around $24.

Anything to be concerned about splicing into the wires? I looked too and wondered why they just had the three wires instead of the normal plug. It seems the circuitry is not protected from water. I know they are "trailer" lights but I was worried they were meant for ATV trailers instead of boat trailers that get dunked.

                              Moki,

I already bought them, thanks for chiming in late.

                              Evil one,

That is a good question. I can't help but think that even with the plug in type, that water gets in there too. Maybe some electrical genius can let me know why this never seems to be a problem. As most of us have done on those shallow ramps (Echo bay right now) I have had even the bumper of the tow vehicle under water and never have a problem.
