Tige Problems / Recall (Customer Satisfaction) Polilcy

I know most of us have read the post about the issue with the bolt's in the swivel board racks being too short thus prone to breaking loose and breaking off putting the passengers at risk.

I look to this board as a massive resource of knowledge that I can gain knowledge pertaining to our beloved pieces of machinery we call our Tige. Back to the point I read the post about the tendency of these board racks to break off and asked my dealer if they had read or heard of this being an issue. They hadn’t and didn’t think it was an issue for me to worry about. Today I was out with 7 people in the boat so people dispersed around the boat (so back corners were occupied). We were heading back to the dock to pick up another rider and the rack we had two boards in broke off flying into the water. We (I especially = Owner responsible for others on the boat) were very lucky it didn’t hit the guy sitting in the back corner let alone the top side of the boat.

Finally to the point we all are obviously very big into reading all about our boats and understanding issues / concerns as well as positives associated with the boats. I know we have a couple of dealers that post here but my dealer neglects to do so (and is supposed to be one of the largest dealers of Tige’s)

I guess the real question is; dose everyone face these issues and are just more persistent than I when dealing with dealer’s or should they mine be more on their game with this issue.

Also it seems like Tige would be better at informing dealer’s and customers of known issues a.k.a. recalls and replacements. This wouldn’t be as big of a deal if I didn’t feel as if someone could have been seriously hurt by this incident that was known about. Also this isn’t the first thing I have brought up that is common knowledge on this board but news to my dealer.

Long post I know but wanted to throw it out for you to see. I will post some pics tomorrow when I bring the camera to the boat.

    board racks

I ripped the tongue of accidently.

Did pick up that I hand caught rope over port rack when turned port to circle baorder in water.

    Observer didnt notice either.

pulled boarder out and was just coming up to 20 knots and the bolts let go and the bounced of back of boat into water just grazing passenger in back port seat. The boarder was my son who is 6ft 4 and 300lbs so I assume the bolts are reasonable strong. There was no damage to swing mechanism but they insisted selling a whole new unit not just the tongues.

I understand your frustrations with a dealer that ignores your concerns because they are disconnected from the Tige and Tige owners network. I believe this info is out there for the dealer but they just have to look for it. I believe some, not many though, choose to play in there own sandbox and are not concerned about what is going on around them.

Tige and Skylon realized this was a problem and made a change for the 07's. But I prefer the 06 version my self. Call or send Harvey Smith a PM and ask him what was done in the production process to prevent this, and if your dealer put a new set (2) on UNDER WARRENTY will they be the modified/reinforced version.

Both mine broke and the dealer (after they sat on his floor for 2 months, God dont get me started on those @$$ holes) sent them to Harvey. He re-threaded them and added a weld and had them back in the mail that day. I am confident that they will not give me any more problems.

Your dealer should help you deal with the issue. That's half the reason I went with Tige to begin with, our local Correct Craft dealer has the worst service and they are very arrogant. Most boat dealers sell more than one type of boat so the manufacturer has little leverage with them. Unfortnately, it seems that some dealers don't get that if you provide excellent customer service after the sale, you will sell more boats. Our dealer is pretty good.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I'd get in touch with Andrew or Harvey if you're not getting the help you need from your dealer. They will make it right.

Is this something that needs to be retrofitted now on '06s, even if you have not yet experienced the failure? Or is this something that is only getting fixed if failed? Warranty period on this is 3 years, correct?

I was in the boat sitting on the side that broke off. It scares me to think about how bad it could have been had those boards caught air and flipped into the boat (those Watsons have SHARP edges). It would have also been awful had the board/rack assembly crashed down the side of the boat (and it wasn't far from doing that).

If I owned or worked at a dealership, I would require my sales/service folks to get on this board and keep up with current issues (and maybe learn a thing or two in the process). Just my opinion.

I would tell anyone with an 06 w/swivel racks to have them either reinforced or replaced, providing there was a production change to strengthen the design before shipping.

Please clarify on the failure point again: A, B or C?

                  I added a "D" to your pic.

The bolt holding "B" to to "D" are (1) too short and (2) B is alluminum.

The simple fix was to add a weld to D and B opposite the bolts. (after thread repair or before first problem)

We were out on the lake and the C was where it broke.

Unfortunately, it flew off and hit my GF son in the forehead. There wasn't any blood but he had one huge bump for awhile. My dealership warrantied the item and got if fixed.

Assuming it was being used for "intended purpose":

I thought previously chpthril stated Tige updated for weak point at B/D for '07. Anyone know if the production update for '07 fixed the weak point at C as well?

I drilled and tapped mine to have about 1" of threads going into the fork then used red loctite and longer screws no problem so far need to just make sure the rope doesnt hang up on the forks before pulling people out of the water

Good question since I do have an 06.

Yes, the racks were being used for the intended purpose and broke lose. The dealer that I bought my boat from didn't say anything about 07 specifically and when this happened, the 07's weren't even out yet.

Have not heard of "C" sepperating from "B" but here are a couple of pics of the 07 racks.

For 07 they eliminated the quich release and added a threaded bolt to release and lock. This bolt will allow the load/wieght of the boards to be disstributed to the bolt instead od 100% of the load being on the 2 short bolt.

Other than the weld, I dont know what has been done by Skylon/Tige to fix the 06 design.
