I'm not sure if it is true but it was explained to me, and I live in CA, that the rider doesn't have to have a USCG approved vest but the boat must have enough for everyone on the boat. I have always used USCG vests but I just bought my first non-USCG vest and I absolutely love it! We just stuff a bunch of the cheap, orange USCG vests in our front compartment to cover everyone on the boat and then ride w/ whatever.

We got hers through a local dealer. I just picked up one of the Jobe' neo vests Costco for has $29 and it's a nice vest, fit's well with plenty of room.

When we bought our boat, the dealer gave us everything at cost. Vests, ropes, boards, tow ropes....etc.

So we use USCG approved b/c that's what we got.

i'm pretty sure that in texas you just have to have enough uscg in the boat and a throwable. the rider can wear whatever. only applies to wakeboarding/skating/surfing that i know of. if somebody knows otherwise please inform me though. i wear an o'neill vapor(has great padding) thats non uscg and when stopped have been asked if we have enough uscg for people in the boat. however i also wear that jacket when wakeskating behind my jetski. have never been hassled about driving w/ it on but i do need to get a uscg for that. plus if i go to tsr it has to be uscg anyway. save me a rental fee.

lee i think jacket buyer's guide is in a previous issue. the website has all the ones they had in it though. buywake and all the other sales sites have most of them to look at.
