It's the only way if you want to control the i-pod through the head unit. If you want to save some money buy an rca to headphone jack cord and plug it into the aux in on the back of the head unit. You have to use the i-pod controls to control the i-pod then, but it is a lot cheaper considering you can pick-up a rca to stereo mini(headphone) cord for about $3.

I think we need to make this into a sticky, it gets asked quite a bit:

I think it might be worth it to get the one that controls your ipod thru the sterio because I currently have the one that hooks up to the head phone jack and it is a pain in the butt to go over to the ipod and change it when I could just change it from the transom remote if I wanted to.Everything happens for a reason

There is another one that hooks up to the dock and power to charge. I personally think the iTunes playlist method sucks. I would rather choose from the iPod but that is why there are options."a what? i can['t] say/spell/pronounce that word..." - wannabewakeboarder

I use the headphone method because I don't want to be limited to the 5 playlists or playing all songs on my i-pod alphabetically a to z. I think Clarion would come up with a better way to work with an i-pod, and probably will soon. That's why I don't want to spend the money for the i-pod connector/charger. Just my opinion though
