    TAPS

Can anyone check this for me, does the TAPS work (plate moves up/down) when you just have the ignition power on, not when engine is running? I am still trying to fix my TAPS and can't figure it out. Originally the problem was an ECM gone bad. Dealer put in a new one, had the boat out a month later and the TAPS does nothing. No sound, movement, nothing. I located a fuse next to the battery (was told this was the TAPS fuse) and changed that, still not working. Called Tige and got a relay, 2" black box with wires under dash, replaced that ($130), still not working. I do notice that when I press the TAPS button on the throttle the battery gauge goes from 14V to zero immediately. If you have the radio on in the boat and press the TAPS you here a loud click/pop and the radio cuts out. Are there wires wrong or a short somewhere?

Sounds like a short to me. It could be in the switch itself. I remember reading a post a while ago from someone who had the same problem.

If you have the hydraulic system, have someone push the trim switch while you give the plate a little boost. I had to do this to remove some air in my lines....had the same symptoms.

Did you have to push hard? How many times did you do it?

Mine took one push assist, and then I had to work it full up and down a few times before the plate was smooth and fast again.

Will the plate move without the engine running?

My 06 will run w/ key on and eng off.

With the volt drop, sounds like the pump/motor is frozen up or shorted.

I have a 2003 as well and we have the electric lenco system, it will move with the key in the run position and with the engine started. We also got noise on the stereo from the taps(also with the blower), but not the same symptoms as you had, we were told to run a ground from the head unit on the stereo to the amp, and thats not going to fix the taps, maybe just the noise on the stereo.

Noise on stereo never happened before the TAPS stopped working, so it has to be related to that. I have to wait to get home to try to move it while pressing the button. Does anyone know of another fuse for the TAPS? Is there one under the dash somewhere?

Greetings TAPS problem people, after putting in a new TAPS fuse, new TAPS relay, checking fluids, and finally checking WIRING IN THE THROTTLE HANDLE, i have come to find the wires frayed. The wiring from under the dash to your throttle handle consists of three wires (RED, Black, White). They are very very thin cheap wires. As they pass through the side wall into the throttle handle they are subjected to being frayed very easily (Since they are not wrapped in electrical tape). I would urge everyone to check yours, it is super easy to use a allen wrench and pull the throttle bulb and arm off. Once you do that, check the wires, if they are good, put some electrical tape on them to keep them that way. On my 2003 the wires were frayed in 3 places, right where they came through the wall, the bottom of the handle, and up where the handle meets the bulb (right where you pull up the round piece to put the boat in gear). I am now waiting for a new TAPS trim switch to put in the handle and will then be able to test if I even need the new relay (my guess is no). With so many things that can happen to the TAPS (bad pump, air in lines, low fluid, bad relay, bad fuse) you forget to check the simple things. Preventive maintenance on this could save you later on.
