UK based 20V

Hi,

I live in the UK and have recently purchased a 2003 20v with a Mercruiser 350Mag. It has only 130 hours on it but has been quite abused and used in salt water. Its now been sorted and its a fantastic boat.

I am however having a problem with the fan belt shredding and wonder if anyone else has had experience with this.

Also I am trying to find an engine manual in the UK, I dont know if anyone can direct me.

I would appreciate any advice

Is the belt tensioner too tight or too loose? How much belt deflection do you get when you push on it? Are the pulleys in alignment while the engine runs?

When I replaced the belt I could just push down half a thumb. With regards to the pully's lining up it was difficult to see if they did or not. did however raplace one pully as I had my doubts about the condition of the bearings

Are you purchasing OEM belts or aftermarket? It may make a difference if your order an original belt.

For awhile the Merc engine had belt problems- shredding belts. It was a fairly well known problem- I think around 2001- 2003 and had to do with the pulleys or tensioner. You can wait to see if someone else on here has more information or do a wider search.

I had a 2002 20V and I seem to recall they needed a spacer. I believe Mercruiser did a bulletin on this but not 100% sure

Carefully check your pulleys for rust build up in the grooves they will act just like sand paper and eat up the belts.

Thanks a lot guys for your help, I replaced the belt the other day, it threw it off on the first outing because it was to tight, I slackened it off and it is fine with no sign of wear. Thanks again
