Black Biminis ~ Are they hotter?

I'm going to be taking the boat to Tower Bimini's soon and am undecided whether to go with a black or red bimini. I'm wondering if the black would be hotter underneath? Never had a dark colored one so i'm clueless on this one.

My first boat had a black bimini with a red stripe. I noticed no difference in the tempurature when sitting under the red stripe.

My current boat is a 24V with a black bimini and I notice no difference between it or my friends boat with a white bimini.

I once read an article in a backpacking mag about whether dark colors made the wearer hotter or not. They found no real differance between the lights and darks as far as heat, but found the darks might block more UV's.

Dont no if this helps, but thought I would pass it on.

The darker the color the more shade you will get underneath. It will not get hotter. Black or Red there might be a small difference but nothing that you would notice. Black to a light gray or white you would notice less shade.

Good that's what i was looking for. I know that the UV experts say you actually get more UV's wearing lighter colors than dark. I'm looking for more shade as it can get brutally hot here. Shasta last year was at 113-118 the week before we were there and I'm NOT looking for a repeat of that without some serious shade!

That's a nice day at the lake in AZ. Most of the summer the water temp is 95+. Can't wait.

The difference being when it's that hot here the 45-60% humifty is brutal. I've been in AZ & NV when it's that hot and it's not as bad due to less humidity. I remember a few years back in Vegas it was approaching around 115 when we flew in and it felt like a 100 degree day at home.

Not much humidity or humifty around here. The phrase is "it's a dry heat".

My friend has a black bimini and I don't feel it is any warmer underneath his than mine, blue. The only thing I remember in the post about the guy that had problems with his tower cover is that the black thread wears out faster. I don't remember the full truth to it, but I remember the statement.

For what its worth, I'm in Texas where its both hot and humid... black bimini all the way!

You get real good shade with Black Bimini. Unless you put your hand on the top, or stand on tip toes and put your cheek to the canvas, no problem. No heat radiation at all that I ever noticed. Hey - we do get up to 105 deg in Eastern WA. once in a while.

its good for drying towels- just drape them over your towel and heat from your bimini will dry them off faster.

Still, its nice and cool underneath.

I had a black bimini on my last boat, and I never noticed anything other than the nice shade it provided. I would think that you are far enough away from the actual fabric that you wouldn't feel the heat it might be absorbing.
