Boat stalling a lot at low speeds.

Well It started happening during the last 2 days of last years season. I went to charge the battery up for this year and saw that it was completely dead and had a little leakage on the top (nothing major). All I had available before the trip in the morning was my Marine Optima which is rated at 760 as opposed to 800 like the default battery. I figured since it's such a good battery it would be fine. I noticed at slow speeds the boat would stall and a alarm would go off and it would slow all the way down. I then have to turn it off and turn it on again to fix the problem. I checked the oil and it was just fine. Would this be something that's caused by lack of battery power? It tends to happen a lot more when turning around and trying to get new riders out of the water over and over.

Also, my red light on the dash (which I'm assuming is my oil pressure since I have no manual from tigi (lame)) seems to come on a lot when I'm going slow speeds. Is this common?

I had the same type of problemb. It didnt stall but it would slow and the alarm would go off. If I restarted it, it would be ok then do it again a few min. later. It turned out to be a loose ground on the engine block.

Hey, man mine did the same exact thing!!!!!! Mine was a bad ground at the batteries. A buddy of mine wiggled it a little on the lake, and it work for the rest of the day. I got back to the house and clean the terminals, now it works like a champ. I have the same beeping noise and then it would just shut off. I restarted it about 5 times. I thought something was way wrong but thank god that was it.

Yep check your grounds. Although becasue you just put a different battery in, (and I'm sure you cleaned the terminals when you did) make sure to check the ground connections on the motor block too.

I had a problem where my MP340 started to run really rough at low speeds, and did not seam to have the same over all power as before.
It turned out that I damaged my ECU when jump starting the boat. MP had to reprogram the ecu, and every thing is good again.

They told me that two things will damage the programming.
1 Jumpstarting the boat
2 Turn the battery switch off while engine is running.

You also have to make sure that the voltage at both batteries are 12.6 and no more than .3 volts differance between the the two other wise the ecm will trip a code 81 and go into limp mode. You also have to check the grounds at the dash bar , the right rear corner of the transom and batteries.

Mine has done this on and off for the past year. Just came home from the dealer, will be in water this weekend so I hope it is corrected. They did not replace any parts, but did go through and check all the connections per Marine Power. (I did this back in July per Harvey but did not help).

My ????, If you have a differance in voltage between the two batteries, what is the cause? Faulty Iso? alternator? battery? battery cable?

I assume that I am looking for a differance in the static charge of the 2 batteries, not the charge voltage? I will be checking this this morning.

Yeah, they all do it. I think it is actually the v-drive trans fluid pressure. The light is there for higher speeds. If the pressure was the same at a highspeed, as it is at idle, there would be trouble which is why it is set where it is.

Would the battery isolator normally take care of this? If not, should I be hooking my Xantrex charger up to both batteries not just the deep cell?

Thanks for all the great replies everyone! I'll definitely check the grounds. My company put a monster stereo in the boat so it's possible they didn't tighten something completely. I should clarify the boat doesn't "die" it just slows all the way down then I have to shut it off and restart it to clear the problem. Like I said the engine seems to run like a champion so it has to be some electrical issue, I'll check everything before my next outing and let you guys know.

On another note. Does the Auto Bilge wire go to the ground or power? I forgot and it got jumbled when I changed the battery.

It could be that your alternator is not providing enough power at idle speeds and your stereo is part of the issue.
