    Ballast Sac and Carpet beneath

OK so after reading G-Money's post about the deal for the Bow Sac deal lots of people will be picking these up.

My question is how those who have used these are handling the wet carpet under them. I know the obvious solution is un-hooking them and removing them so the carpet dries out. This is a bit tedious and increases the risk of leaving a connection unhooked and causing serious issues the next time someone flips the switch to fill the ballast.

Has anyone placed anything under the sac to help drainage from the carpet? I think mine stayed wet all season both in the bow and both back corners this is while leaving the compartments open (under the cover at the Marina on the lift).

Sorry for the long post just thought I would ask and see if anyone else has ran into this issue and come across a solution.

I would do some drilling for drain holes. On the other note though, I don't see how you all are having wet carpet in the 24 series. I mean I have a 21, and I am SO much lower in the water then you all, and as long as I'm driving, I never get it wet up there. My carpet is only wet when My friends drive and feel the need to soak the people. The 24 being so high, I just don't see how you get it wet up there, I know it can be done as my friend has buried his nose in the water, but still........

I think he's got a manual system. My Flying High sack is a PITA because it doesn't have the spring loaded quick connect like my launch pad does. Each time I drain, there's a some water that leaks out of it.

BobbyD, try looking for the EVA-Dry rechargable dehumidifier. I put tow of the larger ones in my bow to absorb moisture when I put my boat away. They do a pretty good job of keeping things from getting nasty.

It may help your carpet to to just add some thick plastic, maybe even a tarp, cut to size and placed under the sack, etc. At a minimum, it will help keep the carpet dry.

            ChpThril,
put in a pretty slick bow drain system:

It does not take a lot of incompetence to take some water over the bow on a 24V, especially when you have a lot of weight.

I frequently find water under the bow sack. Despite holes for drainage, the carpet will NEVER dry with a fat sack lying on top of it. So I take mine out and put a small fan in the storage area and it is usually dry by the next morning. It is indeed a real pain. With the quick connects, it is not as bad as it could be. It is just one more thing to do to maintain the boat.

Once I figured out that one of my sack drains was not screwed in tight enough, I see water up there much less.

On a day with wet kids constantly dripping onto the seats up front, there can get enough water under the sack to make a nice aroma after a few days in the 110 degree garage. So it doesn't even have to be my driving that causes it!
              Be excellent to one another.

The water isn’t necessarily from dipping the bow under water. I think it is from any time someone wet is up front or from condensation from the bags. The biggest problem is the bags are laying flat on the carpet acting almost like plastic wrap on the carpet keeping the water trapped from the open air. (after placing the boat in the garage for the winter after a couple of weeks I pulled the bags out and the carpet was soaked)

I picket up the Air Dryer "happy's mildew fighter" i think that’s the name after seeing it recommended on the board early in the season. It did a good job drying out the inside of the boat just not under the bags. This didn’t take care of the carpet under the bags since it is covered with the bags. I may have to look into drilling the holes for drainage at least in the front. On the back compartments I haven’t looked yet but wouldn’t think they could have holes drilled

I don’t think the tarps / plastic under the bag would help since it would have the same effect of sealing the water from air exchange.

I was thinking of something that would cause the plastic to be raised off the carpet but not cause problems with cutting the bags. One thing that is coming to mind is the anti-slip foam you can put under rugs. This may help develop channels to move the air under the bag when they are not filled and it should compress fine under the pressure.

That gives me an idea. If I put fresh cream underneath my bags, by the end of the day, I should have some nice cheese curd to enjoy!

Oh, i see. Guess I normally just don't have enough people in my boat. Very rarely do I have enough where people sit in front while we are boarding. Guess I need to make more friends!

Someone had the idea of gatorgripping the entire front storage area (or even putting in a rubber liner instead of carpet). I really like that idea because you can then just wipe it down when you're done.

The Gator-grip or rubber liner makes sense and would work perfectly. My only concerns are first re-sell = if others would rather have carpet since they would actually use the storage to place things in instead of ballast. The other is it has to be difficult to remove that carpet in the hard to reach spaces. It would be a nice option from the factory (carpet or rubber lining in compartments)

Tigé might like to know about that one

Matt can you pass a couple of words around when you go to the factory?

What can you fit in there? I can't even fit a Danforth anchor up there . Right now I have absolutely nothing up front.

I also don't know about that sitting high in the 24 series. I guess I've never been in your boat but my nose is awfully close to the water. I have yet to get water over the bow but my I/O friends are amazed how low the nose sits in the water. Its pretty sweet looking when the boat is coming to pick you up after a face plant, very shark like. I wish I had a waterproof camera so I could get a nice picture of that.

Not sure what the other people who don’t fill up the compartments with ballast bags would put in those storage compartments. I have always had my bag in the boat so haven’t used them and indeed may have not used them to begin with so it might not be a worry for re-sell.

On the nose I'm not saying it sits high or low just not getting wet primarily from water over the bow more from others in the boat.

we'll have to see who is the first to grab that shot...I haven’t paid attention to the front with the shark eyes guess I am busy making sure the driver sees me and is paying attention.
