Well, I finally got to put my multi-meter on the steering cable up at the steering rack there was 0.24 volts showing while idling through the ICW, saltwater. I am not sure what effect this would have on the steering cable life, but I figured I would report it.

took my '01 22iR out today for the 1st time this year and the steering was stiff as all hell. its been hard to turn in the past but then loosened up. today was terrible though. i'm assuming i should grease the cable but can anyone tell me where the zerks are on my model? i really don't want to buy/install a new one if i don't have to. being that its been so long i may have to though and i have no clue how to do it on an i-drive.

Thank you for the post on the voltage reading , any voltage above .20 will eat the cable with corrosion.

By grounding the items that I mentioned earlyer you will elliminate the flow of current through the cable.

I am thinking of adding a salt water chlorine generator to my pool, and in doing research on them I found a really good post on dissimilar metals and electrolysis...that is what is killing your steering cables. If it is not cool to post urls to other sites here please forgive me and moderator can delete. Anyhow it is

I found it interesting, others might too. FIC and others are exactly right, by electrically connecting them together you remove the voltage potential across the steering cable, then it is no cathode and anode surrounded by electrolyte ( makes a battery).

                Off topic, off topic...

I would love to see an entire pool made of stainless steel, that is freakin' crazy!!!

Back on topic now...I am going to get my steering grounding system made and installed hopefully this week and will take some pictures.

Atleast I did it consciously and warned people, and brought it right back

And yes Zad, you have been good at leaving posts be, thanks for that

When greasing the rudder through mount/pivot, how much grease should be forced out the bottom??? When I greased mine I forced out about a good nickel sized glob before I realized it. It doesn't damage any seals or anything does it?

Any more than 1/2 nickle will do damage.

Just joking, you should be ok.

I disagree, it is the technical reason the steering cables fail, thought that was the "topic". I saw numerous posts asking why the cables fail, especially in salt water and thought it was a valuable addition to explain what the root cause was, I am root cause kinda guy and was not a dirt road to the topic. My bad.
