Yes, any diesel can smoke. With the newer ECM controlled diesels, if they smoke or make excessive noise, there is bound to be an ECM/sensor issue.

Your right diesel's have come so far in the last few years. I still don't think I would want one on my boat though. They do have a HUGE torque curve though.

But diesel, as in the raw fuel is so smelly and sticky! I mean I wear gloves when filling up my truck, just to keep the smell off, and the pump handles are always covered, it's just gross. Not too mention those using them in cold weather=PITA! Oh well, each to his own. I sure wouldn't knock tige for trying it, but not sure how much they would sell.

I don't think it is centurion...the guy that owns this company, www.mastry.com lives on the ICW and has an x-star that he put a yanmar diesel in and it is one awesome boat. It is actually very quiet and does not smoke at all. He uses about 1/3 less fuel and around here you can get diesel on the water cheaper than unleaded since that is what all the commercial boats and big yachts use. I know he was working with MC about doing a diesel and I find it interesting that they would go with the VW when there are some volvo, yanmar, and steyr powerplants out there that are considered far more reliable since they are not new to the marine environment. It will be neat to see how it pans out and I know I would buy one. I've even thought about a way to fit a yanmar in if the marinepower ever takes a dump.

That's pretty cool. See on the coast I could see using it, but mainland I think it's pretty hard to find diesel on the lakes.

Diesels have come farther in the past 3 years than gasoline engines have in the past 20.

For example- the common rail turbodiesel injection, and the new diesel particulate filters.

Also, regarding noise- All three of the "big 3" are shipping diesels that are quieter than their gasoline counterparts. I know this from experience.

I will be making my own biodiesel, and am currently investigating an investment opportunity for algae-produced biodiesel.

The bottom line is that its not just a cost thing. It's an enviroment thing.

I just remembered the boat I saw a diesel option in is Session. I know they are not making too many boats as someone just bought the line from Regal, but there was one at the show in Miami and I remember that being an option.

That would be interesting as well. Oh yeah, but also to make your own it's expensive unless you use it alot when you have to buy the kit or make your own, ya know?

the one is 3 grand, but I guess you could make your own, but still.... gotta factor all that in.

I just watched this show the other day about cars of the future and one of the alternate fuel sources was hydrogen and they have these elctrolisis machines that seperate the oxygen from the hydrogen and you pull up and put the hydrogen in the car and then the car turns it back into water and you get electricity and you release water. If you had the electrolisis machine on you boat taking in water and seperating and then reforming it created electricity your boat would never need to be refueled, just have a source of water. Correct?

yes that's correct, the problem is no one has been able to successfuly do this. It's all speculation. When you start messing with this kind of energy it's HUGE deal. I stand corrected, I believe someone has done it on a small, very small and in a controlled enviroment scale.

I'd never get my $$$ back out of diesel. And anyone that thinks BioDiesel is going to be cheap has got another thing coming. Go into Academy and get yourself a 5 gallon jug of peanut oil for $20+ bucks. We've already proven what we're willing to pay for gas, and the diesel prices are more ridiculous right now. The excuse is about shifting to lower sulfur emmissions and it's costing oil companies too much. LOL, I've seen their profits for the past 2 yrs. And gas prices are going up because of a more expensive summer blend?? MMMMM this sh1t sandwich tastes good. Want a bite?
