    How 'bout a Tige Diesel?

Let me preface this in saying that my next boat will be diesel powered. This is partially because of the kind of torque thats inherent to this type of engine. However- its becoming more and more apparent to me that biodiesel is the way to go. If you're interested in knowing more, let me know.

In the meantime, enjoy- and hopefully Tige will take note:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
MasterCraft enter exclusive co-operation with Volkswagen Marine

Exclusivity agreed for diesel power options on MasterCraft ski boats

Salzgitter / Isle of Man, December 1st 2006 – MasterCraft as leading manufacturer of high profile ski boats and performance craft will be offering Volkswagen’s most advanced marine diesel engine, the Audi-based three litre TDI 225-6, in their boat models “MariStar 280” and the World Record competition ski boat “ProStar 190”

After almost one year of joint development efforts, the two companies are now in a position to offer their customers a new marriage of high technology packages:

MasterCraft ski boats are globally appreciated for their build quality and leading edge design, but even more so for the continuously applied perfectionism aimed at the needs of today’s water skiing and wakeboarding community. The result is a range of uncompromising craft which are often elected for tough commercial use profiles.

Whereas these boats have until now only been available with large capacity gasoline engines based on U.S. designs, two boat models are now available with the latest of high technology diesel packages in the marine market. The Volkswagen Marine TDI 225-6 is at this present time the only marine diesel in its class to use piezo controlled, third generation common rail injection. This provides low noise and vibration levels which are proven to be superior in comparison with existing V-8 gasoline marine engines.

At the same time, the TDI 225-6 uses variable turbo charging and an extremely fast electronic management to offer even more spontaneous acceleration than gasoline engines of supposedly higher rating – eliminating any noticeable trace of previously known “turbo lag”.

Users of this new diesel option will, in comparison with the gasoline power options, enjoy very similar top speeds, but even stronger acceleration especially at lower speeds.

This advantage is accompanied with a cut in average fuel consumption of at least 50% in typical ski boat use, which is in most countries further enhanced by the price advantage of diesel fuel against gasoline.

Finally, the sophisticated engine management system qualifies all Volkswagen Marine engines as stringent “Non Smokers”. Their emission standards are so advanced that they are welcome on any skiing waters in the world, as long as combustion engines are allowed there at all.

The decision for the installation of Volkswagen Marine TDI 225-6 in MasterCraft boats will either be taken for their sheer fun of use, or for the substantial advantage in operating cost in the case of commercial applications. Or of course for both of these reasons.

The TDI 225 is presented in detail on www.volkswagen-marine.com

    Some key facts:
Rated output (maximum & continuous): 165 kw (225 hp)
Weight (dry, without reverse gear): 325 kg
Torque: 450 Newton metres already at
    2.000 rpm

Sounds like the Volkswagon has the answer to my biggest complaint about diesels on boats:

"Finally, the sophisticated engine management system qualifies all Volkswagen Marine engines as stringent “Non Smokers”. Their emission standards are so advanced that they are welcome on any skiing waters in the world, as long as combustion engines are allowed there at all."

Anyone who has spent time scrubbing Diesel exhaust residue off a boat knows what a pain in the butt it is.

Ruune, What about Dieseling, the Noise produced from a diesel, think that would bother people? I know riding in diesel trucks can get annoying after awhile. I'm sure there are some more quiet motors out there though.

The noise and smoke is all about injection timing and quantity. Duramax has almost perfected it in trucks, and VW and Benz has done the same for cars.

Shows what I know! Seriously though, I would hate to have my boat sound like a School bus.

The torque range would be great though.

The Benz diesel is as quiet or more quiet than the comparable gasoline model. That's what I'd want in my boat. As for emissions, just run biodiesel. Bring snacks tho, you'll be hungry!

um duramax can smoke just as much as anything else, and drive them for 20M miles and they are just as loud.

Diesel would be next to imposible to find on my lakes. Plus it's so expensive, no way! I like my gas job boat!

And biodiesel will not be cheap forever, a kit to make it is 3 grand, and they are getting ready to start taxing the crap out of it. It won't be the easy way out forever.

part of the reason though they are so quiet is the amount of sound deadening material.

You ever driven an old 6.5 gm or the dodge, I keep looking for the pull chain for the airhorn.........."breaker 1 9, got yer ears on"

Yes, any diesel can smoke. With the newer ECM controlled diesels, if they smoke or make excessive noise, there is bound to be an ECM/sensor issue.

Diesels have come further in the past 10 years than gasoline engines have in the last 20.

yup sure do. I also know that diesel is getting ready to be the cheap fuel again, thanks to the arnold. So get ready. It's already the same price as gas again.

I don't think it is centurion...the guy that owns this company, www.mastry.com lives on the ICW and has an x-star that he put a yanmar diesel in and it is one awesome boat. It is actually very quiet and does not smoke at all. He uses about 1/3 less fuel and around here you can get diesel on the water cheaper than unleaded since that is what all the commercial boats and big yachts use. I know he was working with MC about doing a diesel and I find it interesting that they would go with the VW when there are some volvo, yanmar, and steyr powerplants out there that are considered far more reliable since they are not new to the marine environment. It will be neat to see how it pans out and I know I would buy one. I've even thought about a way to fit a yanmar in if the marinepower ever takes a dump.
