    Boat Buckles

I'm trying to figure out where to clip my Boat Buckles. It seem that the easiest place to attach them is onto the platform brackets as opposed to the transom hooks. Anyone see any problem with this? The platform brackets seem quite strong and I really dont want to have the buckle rub against my gelcoat, plus the clearance between the platform and boat is minimal.
I am aware that the platform brackets will not stop the boat in a major accident, but I really doubt that the bolt, which attaches the buckle to the trailer or the strap will stop the boat anyway in a major wreck.

Any thoughts or ideas? I dont want to start drilling into my trailer until I figure out what I'm going to do.

As you can see in this pic, there is minimal space between the platform and boat. I've never used boat buckles in the past, so maybe I'm not looking at this correctly.

Your Platform is mighty close there. In a previous thread which I cannot locate people have attached to the swim platform brackets for the same reason as you. I believe the post was by delongheavyhaul. No time to look for it now though.

      Love the look of teak!!!
      Let it be!!!

Found the link, but I still do not have an answer. It would be nice is someone from Tige would let us know if this is an appropriate thing to do. Aren't tie downs manditory in some states?.....ie California??

California it is the LAW that the backs have to be tied down. I have several friends that are CHP officers and they tell me the only way you will really get called on it is if your are driving really crazy, get pulled over, and you have a new officer or a butt.... for an officer. They have also told me when the swim deck is on they can not really see clearly if it is straped or not and in order to pull you over they have to be able to see an obvious violation of the law.

I use the platform brackets without any problem. The loop on the trailer is so far outboard that i cannot get a straight pull on the transom brackets and it chaffs the crap out of the straps on the platform brackets anyway! But them my boat is a lot lighter than yours too.

I've been using the transom brackets for 2 years and have not had any issues @ all....... I would rather be a little safer and havea small rub markby my swim platform then having my boat slip off the trailer.. I know it's a long shot but all of us know just when you think something can't happen.......it does!!!! just my .02 cents! :-)

                  Sparky,

I have an 05 22i, I have room in between the teak platform and the transom for my tie downs. I prefer to hook them on under the platform brackets so they don't rub the gelcoat. Did you get the retractable tie downs?

                    Mark,

Yea, they are called Boat Buckles. I think I'm going to hook them to the platform brackets until someone tells me otherwise.

                    Thanks

I have the Boat Buckles and attatch them to the platform. I couldn't get a clear answer on this before, but the platform is very solid. I figure the straps are as much for stopping the boat from bouncing up and down independently from the trailer as stopping it from going forward or back. In a major accident or incident I don't know if the straps will hold, but that would take a great amount of force to tear the platform brackets off the back of the boat. Maybe this is why the lifting rings on the rz are so low.

I have a Sport Boat Trailer and I was unable to get the Boat Buckles onto the trailer without drilling. The tie downs I use now work fine, attaching to the transom hooks and not scraping the gel coat. I am able to slip the strap between the swim deck and the transom, , but it is a slight pain to get the straps tight. They work, and that's all that matters.

Does anyone have any pics of gelcoat problems from the tie down straps? I just put mine to the hooks like I am supposed to and have no visible areas of wear. On a black boat it might show sooner, but I have yet to see actual proof that happens. The straps are relatively soft material.

Is it absolutely necessary to have tie down straps in the rear?
