ok, sounds good. Thanks for the info sp.

I'll separate my sealed one for sure, but i'm still confused about the ported. Should I separate?

I have the vent size and all that good jazz.

    Thanks again.

A lot of construction these days isn't in the interest of good sound but instead centers around good looks. Kind of a shame actually.

very true about the construction. I'm attempting to do both, I hope I can do it.

1/2" is good for areas no larger than 1' square, over that you need some bracing. I like double up 1/2" on the face boards, and on rectangular ports no matter how large. Just the way I build boxes. 3/4" inch is great for huge amounts of rigidity, so you are definately good to go. Is poplar similar to MDF? That isn't common construction material around here.

Domz....I would split the box, and leave the port single if it is square....does that make sense? I would sperate out round ports for wach driver. Do you have a cross section of how your box will be constructed?

here is a crude sketch. Ports are 4 inches, speakers are 12's Want to run the top and the back side plexi, everything else mdf, on legs for protection from water and stuff, they are 2 inches tall

                ports are 10 inches long

going with 3.9 cubic feet total inclosure, this allows enough for speakers and ports.

                Thanks

Is that more or less the shape you need? You are going to get very different sound from those two drivers. Have you thought of running 2 different size subs to make better use of the space available? Let me see what I may be able to draw up for you. Whats the total length of that going to be roughly?

                  And what width?

I can make a rectangle. I was just wanting to make it that way so I could have a sorta of recliner seat shape for people to lay down and put there feet front ways, and also could sit on the back and be a spotter. But honestly I can also just make the seat that shape and not the box. It was just an idea, everythhing is just drawings now. Width can be no more the 14.5 inches length can't be anymore the 36ish, not sure since i have another box in front of this one with 2 10's.

This is what I would do, and I may do with what I am going to build although I am going to use a single driver. Probably a high excursion 8". I don't like round ports.

You could also let the ports come through the front and rear, and would probably optimal as you will have no space onthe sides of your box.

thanks sp, I think what I will do is make a rectangular box, and then make the seat hold the shape I want.

Why don't you like round ports? I could make a rectangular port come outt the top back.

A port out of the top back would be too long. It would probably be tuned somewhere subsonic.

Round ports "burp" too much for my liking, but it is nice to be able to change the tuning by cutting the length down. A rectangular port you have to know what freq you want. I usually try to tune between 32-38Hz

oh ok,well will a port down into the bottom be ok? I mean will it still hit hard? I can do your design real easy, just wondering if I will loose any sound or anything?

I think it may seem muffled/muddy because there is no venting on the sides. Have you ever had an enclosure in an SUV and played with moving it closer to the rear? It gets muffled as it gets beyond a sweet spot. The down firing enclosures allow the subs to "load", but without having the ports firing into an open area, I think you will have some standing waves. Now if that is a sealed enclosure, then it would be fine to "load" them that close.

That front and rear slot port will make a sweet sounding box. The ports could be arranged to hit near the bottom too.
