I don't know how much you guys enjoy reading about the boat refirbs some members have done/are doing; but I have some more to add to mine.
I finally got all my new instruments in. They look aweome. The install on the far left instruments was the hardest part. I have a few fiberglass splinters to prove it. It was a much worthy upgrade.
First some photos of the only instruments to survive removal....the others shattered and broke into pieces when pulling them. The VDO instruments really were trash. You can also see the new (the newer boats run the same style) modular rocker switches and thermal breakers I picked up from mouser on the rocker panel. I need to get a new vinyl sticker for it still.
Original
And the new
I had posted some pics of my comps a while back....well the head unit and transom remote are also in, please excuse the dirty boat. I haven't had it uncovered in a while, so the condensation wad started to leave deposits.
I also snapped a few photos of the alternator that I recently installed. I spent alot of time under the engine tuning up and making adjsutments, tracing wires etc. I also figured out why I had a smoker for a boat....more on that in a bit. I also have new water pumps all around, and that purple wire is the new 2GA alternator cable for the charging system. I should be set like a screw.
So on to the other stuff. I pulled my plugs recently trying to diagnose why I the boat was smoking so much. Low and behold I find short plugs in a Vortec head. I don't know how familiar you guys are with engines, but the original vortecs had a real thick head. The spark plugs had to be long reach. If you do a basic lookup on a 350 plug at NGK you get a short plug. Well, the mechanic that worked on this boat at the Mairna in North Alabama didn't take time to look at the old plugs when he changed them, or was a pecker and didn't want to order the right parts. Anyway, the spark was basically happening inside the head, so the fuel was not being burned well at all. I switched the plugs out to a proper model, and changed wires, and put a new coil in and I am good to go. I only have to get a starter before this summer, or tighten mine maybe. It has been slipping during engagement as of late.
And to top things off, I also ordered my MonsterTower today!......black powder coat with a rack. I love the price. I leaned away from monster for a while because of the look on some boats, but after researching since I had my boat, I finally decided between it and the Titan. I saw a few install photos of the Monster opened to about 66" and it was nice sleek and aggressive, so I'll be installing mine between 66" and 68" front to back. That's a little wider than the factory would have been had I a tower.
Anyway, thanks for reading my journal entry....more photos to come!
