    Boat updates, improvements.

I don't know how much you guys enjoy reading about the boat refirbs some members have done/are doing; but I have some more to add to mine.

I finally got all my new instruments in. They look aweome. The install on the far left instruments was the hardest part. I have a few fiberglass splinters to prove it. It was a much worthy upgrade.

First some photos of the only instruments to survive removal....the others shattered and broke into pieces when pulling them. The VDO instruments really were trash. You can also see the new (the newer boats run the same style) modular rocker switches and thermal breakers I picked up from mouser on the rocker panel. I need to get a new vinyl sticker for it still.

    Original

    And the new

I had posted some pics of my comps a while back....well the head unit and transom remote are also in, please excuse the dirty boat. I haven't had it uncovered in a while, so the condensation wad started to leave deposits.

I also snapped a few photos of the alternator that I recently installed. I spent alot of time under the engine tuning up and making adjsutments, tracing wires etc. I also figured out why I had a smoker for a boat....more on that in a bit. I also have new water pumps all around, and that purple wire is the new 2GA alternator cable for the charging system. I should be set like a screw.

So on to the other stuff. I pulled my plugs recently trying to diagnose why I the boat was smoking so much. Low and behold I find short plugs in a Vortec head. I don't know how familiar you guys are with engines, but the original vortecs had a real thick head. The spark plugs had to be long reach. If you do a basic lookup on a 350 plug at NGK you get a short plug. Well, the mechanic that worked on this boat at the Mairna in North Alabama didn't take time to look at the old plugs when he changed them, or was a pecker and didn't want to order the right parts. Anyway, the spark was basically happening inside the head, so the fuel was not being burned well at all. I switched the plugs out to a proper model, and changed wires, and put a new coil in and I am good to go. I only have to get a starter before this summer, or tighten mine maybe. It has been slipping during engagement as of late.

And to top things off, I also ordered my MonsterTower today!......black powder coat with a rack. I love the price. I leaned away from monster for a while because of the look on some boats, but after researching since I had my boat, I finally decided between it and the Titan. I saw a few install photos of the Monster opened to about 66" and it was nice sleek and aggressive, so I'll be installing mine between 66" and 68" front to back. That's a little wider than the factory would have been had I a tower.

Anyway, thanks for reading my journal entry....more photos to come!

Quite a project spharis. Grest job on the instruments. Is your aternator wire big enough? Good catch on the plugs. If you want it done right, sometimes you just have to do it yourself. Looking forward to more pictures of your project as it continues.

LOL...yeah that's some leftover wire from a 100' spool of Esoteric I had purchased to do an install on an SPL setup. i had that running back to a distribution block in the rear. The system in there was almost as big as Coaches :P

Thats a hell of a system. Imagine what it would do to the hull of a boat...

Shimmed the starter 1/16" today....painfully obvious once I pulled it out.....it was engaging about 1/4" if at all. I wish I knew the mechanic that worked on this thing so I could send him a bullet.

Changed the oil too. Almost ready....Monster Tower goes on this weekend. Prop should be here soon from Lee. One more battery to get, and a couple of holes to cut....more pics later. Project ol' school almost done.

Where did you get the remote? I'm assuming you had to cut a hole to fit it?

Where did you end up putting your hour meter? I want to fit a depth meter into my console, but don't know where to put the hour meter.

It came from high dessert audio on ebay. They are Rockford Fosgate's closeout seller ID. The remote was $18 shipped I think.

Yes....and be forewarned....2" in a marine manual is 2 1/4" in real life. I had to dremel out my nice round hole to get it to drop in. Also make sure you pull everything out of the back because your fuel pump/sender and some vent hoses are in that area.

Hour meter is in the rpm gauge. It is a similar gauge to what Tige' used in the 02+ models with the chrome bezel. The Taps instrument I installed is from an '02 model. I want a depth finder as well, but I like my fuel flow, so I am going to eventually put a depth meter in the panel just in front of the throttle.

Very nicely done on the guages and maintenance. You should be pleased with yourself!

The Monster Towers are great looking when they're mounted with enough front to back spread - with the homework you've done, I'm sure it will be optimized. They're nice and thick 'phatter/stiffer/stronger', and the board racks are great (I've had 2 of them for 5 or 6 seasons). Sweet Upgrade - eager for more pics.
