I've been slow to respond to some PMs because I don't look at the unread section at the top. On another forum I visit it used to popup a message telling me I had a new PM. I went into the settings and noticed that option was unchecked for me. Maybe that is the default or maybe I changed it. Either way, I would recommend to everyone that uses PMs to go to their Control Panel and under Edit Options select:

If you are browsing the forums when you receive a new private message, the system can pop-up a notification box informing you of the new message.

You can also set a preference to receive an email notification when you get a private message.

It's one or the other for me. I go to the site enough the pop up is perfect.
