After a hard day of boarding we can kick back, cruise around the lake with our 5 hp, cook some hamburgers, watch the birds at the bird feeders, and wind down in the luxury bedroom.

There were all kinds of craft out on the high seas that day my friends, which put me on the beach drinkin' beer. I spotted this guy out in an early 60's flat bottom. He was gonna race everybody out there, jet skis, tow boats, family i/o's, anything. From our spot on the beach, we can hear him yelling at people trying to get somebody to race him. Obviously drunk, he finally starts pulling up next to boats that are already underway and trying to get them to race with him. Finally he just starts making speed runs back and forth and just flying this flat bottom off the waves. I say to my buddies, "Watch this, he's gonna wreck that boat." Sure enough, next pass, he launches the thing and when it comes down, the port side finds a BIG hole in the water. This causes the boat to turn violently to the right with the starboard side way up in the air. So he gets pitched out of the boat and the boat sucks a bunch of water down the intake, thankfully cutting out the motor. As the boat is coasting, it has found itself in a nice little turn to port. It comes all the way around to where it's jackassed owner is bobbing in the waves and stops right in front of him. He was able to climb back in. Truly a lucky SOB.

Ok, what happened here was drunk guy returning from party cove late at night. Driving at probably close to full speed on his 45 foot Sea Ray. Nearly missed a bridge support just before running aground on a golf course. He and the girls on board with him were injured, he fled the scene and the women had whiplash and cuts and bruises. The next couple days that cove was a popular anchoring spot.

Ah the infamous Port O Cima Wreck. I heard they had just finished that green.

My Learning oppurtunities

1. Bungs
First ski boat was old 14 foot 85 horsepower outboard. Let fopr weekend by dealer. Supplied two bungs. Mate was helping and put in bungs ( ex naval seaman officer) and we duly launched. Boat was very sluggish all morning really struggled to gwt p on plane. Pulled boat and water came pouring out of double cavity. Boat needed four bungs. Wives volunteered and drank two bottles of champagne so we could use corks as bungs and we were off and away. I now always check the bungs my self.

2. Fire at boat ramp.
Second boat 18ft 350 chev inboard. Had been playing up all day on two days after service. Decided to pull boat and take to service. Parked 100 yards from boat ramp at our ski park. Just as brother in law ( co owner) was almost at ramp with trailer he is beaten by a someone else launching in the middle of both ramps so he can not get past. I patiently sit in river idling around. The chap does not want to get his new long slung high performance v8 wet so does bak car far enough back and they can not get boat off. They then disconnect the car from the trailer and tie a rope to it and pull the trailer up the car and after three goes finally get the trailer far enough in to get the boat off. They then start loading stuff from the car into the boat. Fin ally after about 25 minutes they clear the ramp. My Brother in law back trailer down. I line up boat and start idling forward motor misses so I give throttle a nudge to stop stalling and bang she back fires and blow engine cover off the jerry in back ( that it thought was empty mistake 2) catches fire. I dive over board. Reach over and find fire extinguisher and put it out. Blocks came from every where to help and threw fire extinguisher at me. ( note throwing a full fire extinghishing into boat does not help. Only minor aphols damage as was just a few fumes that has leaked out of jerry. I was so impressed with the support bought a cabin at park.

3. First Tige
When getting insurance claimed for bought sorted out adjuster said normally when they back fire like that they catch the drivers seat on fire and burn the driver.

I got the boat fixed, went to boat show to buy new boat fuel injected that I did not have to crawl into drivers seat ( escape from). Hence the Tige 20i and very happy to have just upgraded to a 07 22ve. I like the turn key no fuss starts just a car.

1. You have to check every thing out yourself.
2. No jerries in boat even for 100 yards
3. fuel injections, bilges blowers
4. keep clear of ramp hogs
5. be a good boating friend and the favour will be returned if you have trouble.

Ok i have one. About 12 years ago we went to Lake Berryessa for the infamous Memeorial day bash. We camped at the Putah Creek campground on the bluff which has a commanding view of the entire campground below. As the campground has a spring break atmosphere during this weekend it's great to see from above.

Day One ~ The Campground; About ten of us perched chairs on the edge and as we watched the goings on below this truck pulls in towing a flat bottom dual sponson hydro with a stand up style jet ski in the bed of the truck. Everything is exotically painted to match and the truck is brand spankin new, paper plates and all. He pulls up the hill a bit so he can back up, the jet ski breaks the cord, yes CORD like in clothesline that had it tied in, slides down the bed, busts open the tailgate, hits the corner of the right boat sponson snaping off about 4" of the tip, bounces off a big rock and rolls down the hill!!

Well we'd been drinking in camp so the whole hill erupts in laughter as does most of down below. Granted it wasn't really funny but at the moment it was. All that did was fuel the guys anger and he's cussing like a sailor and screaming at his poor girlfriend/wife. A bunch of guys from down below help him get the ski back in the truck and off he goes after trying to close the now severly dented tailgate on the truck!

Day Two ~ The Ramp; So we're at the ramp launching and who do we see, Mr. Bash, about 50 feet out trying to get the boat back to the ramp as the duct tape he'd tried to make a patch with hadn't held and the boat was taking on water! More cussing and screaming as he tries to load, not very well mind you! He tied up the ramp for quite awhile and people are short on patience by now. He finally loads the boat, parks the trailer and backs down the ramp again so he can unload the ski. Oh yeah, this truck is a 10" lifted monster.

Of course he hadn't thought that one out very well so he backed way in the water to slide off the ski and went off the end of the ramp! , no problem, four wheel drive right? Wrong! The back tires are mired in mud, the fronts can't get enough traction as it's totally wet and he's stuck! Give it gas! Muddy water is flying everywhere, people are pissed and someone finally tows his butt out. More ramp mess from him!

Just when you think it's over, he remembers the jet ski! Where'd it go? It sank, about twenty feet out! It seems when it slammed the rock on the hill it split open the hull and he never checked it out! Need i tell what happened then?

We were about to push away from the dock when this large center console (25') comes hauling butt in and right up onto the ramp, made it far enough up the ramp that it forced his stern down and the prop started hitting the bottom. The guy says it seemed like the throttle was stuck or the linkage might have come apart. It took about 6 people to get the boat back in the water and someone takes the cover off the engine and starts looking at it with the guy. His wife was holding the line of the boat and for some STUPID reason, they decided to start the boat again. It immediately takes off up the ramp again and this time yanks his poor wife in the water scarily close to the stern. Once again a group got together to push him back in and we asked him to please pull the boat out manually this time. His wife looked MAAAAD!!!

So yes I've done the "no plug in the boat as it slides off the trailer" and maybe ran my 1969 tri-hull with the 60 HP Johnson a little too far up on the beach.

But the best one I ever witnessed in person was an ex-friend, after a long night, wanting to go skiing at 6AM. He proceeds to back his car in a bit too far, then tries to back the boat off the trailer. One minor issue, missed one of the tie downs so when the boat went into reverse everything went floating off the ramp. Wind was blowing out from the ramp, car went down in about 15ft of water. At least he got the boat unhooked so it didn't get pulled under.

Diver and tow truck guy were claiming any fish that were in the car when they pulled it out were theirs.

Boy Scouts Wake Boat

Here is what the Boy Scouts use for wake boarding. The best one I ever saw was at Strawberry lake in Utah. There were a bunch of guys with a 16' Glastron trying to show of to some girls floating on a tube. They failed to look in front of them and see that they were getting ready to drive the boat right of the boat loading ramp at full speed. That was a classic to watch and I still laugh about it when I get the image in my head. Needless to say the girls just were not impressed with the Glastron 16' or the guys on the boat.
