Evil One requested info on the bungee upgrade to the WD Board Racks that I did - here it is, with a little background.
Like most (all?) of you, the bungee rubber on my WD racks was breaking down and leaving black marks on everything, which in turn was getting on our upholstery - unacceptable. For the record, my boat is stored inside, so the only UV contact the boat has is when it's in use - these bungees broke down so quickly that one the pull handles snapped off at the 20 hour mark on my engine meter - Junk! My dealer sent me a set of replacement WD bungees, and these were no better - my hands were black when I took them out of the shipping bag!!!
Thinking back on the original WD Bungee design, having four 'clips' on these racks (two for each board) was also a drag - not convenient at all, and time consuming.
I will say that at least the rubber inserts that the boards slide into on the WD's can be conditioned occasionally w/some 3M Protectant (or similar) and only mark the boards a little bit.
I've had two Monster Tower Board Racks for 5 years or so that show NO WEAR on bungee (it's elastic) or fork insert. They also have quick release mechanisms for easy install/removal - read: no bugs on your racks when you arrive at the launch ramp. Monster's bungees are simple and effective. I called Monster and told them how much better I liked their system than WD's and they sent me two additional bungees/crimps/shrink wraps, which I retro-fitted to the WD's to make them similar to my Monster's.
Simple process: A. Remove the what's left of the WD Bungees (remove end cap and then nut/screw); B. Throw away and like it; C. Drill pilot hole in WD fork and increase size of hole until you can slide the new elastic bungee through; D. Put shrink wrap pieces on elastic bungee, slide elastic bungee ends through hole(s), crimp, shrink (wrap); E. Enjoy!
Attached are a few pics of the Monster and modified WD. Note that I orient the WD rack w/the drilled forks on top - when you put the board in the rack, it is easy to lay the bungee on the board (gravity is your friend for once) and then pull it down over the board w/one hand - nice. Last pic is of the T* packed and stacked - ready to Rock.
Trust me when I tell you that your crew will thank you. In addition to no more black stuff on their hands and everything, they are much quicker and easier to use.
