    Sound insulation for motor noise.

Just breaking in our 2020 RZX23. My only real complaint after our first weekend on the water was engine noise. Seemed quite a bit louder at surfing and cruising speeds than my past boats. Anyone had any success or have any suggestions on sound insulation? Don't want to create heat or fume issues. But thought there may a simple way to insulate the compartment some to cut the noise a bit.

I haven't had any customers want to use it on their boat but I've used Dynamat and Hushmat with pretty good success in other applications. I think it could help with your issue and is a pretty easy DIY route.

Did you get a fresh air exhaust? They help a ton. After that the engine cover is pretty well insulated now. I wonder if pulling that out and redoing with dynamat would be better. You could put mat on the underside of the floor panel and also on the engine divider walls.

couple guys over on the moomba forums have had good luck with a generic dynamat on the engine compartment lid and parts that share with the seating areas.

I installed NOICO in our boat based off of the suggestion of a former Tige Owner on here still occasionally (dakota4ce). Easy to install. I think it helped. I wouldn’t say it’s a drastic reduction, but for $65 and a couple hours of installation, I’d say it was worth it.

I actually have Kilmat on its way for this. Wife was a little surprise on the new boat vs our old one, I wasn't surprised when comparing to the boat I ride during the week on the river. Plus a DD 5.7L to a Vdrive 6.2L is expected in my mind. So after reading a few of the other posts going to try it out on our boat, hopefully this weekend if it comes in, as its suppose to rain.

Looking forward to hearing about the Kilmat. I have a DD and have been thinking about trying the Kilmat as RV/Bus owners have used it with some good success.

Well I was able to get a little done this evening. Tomorrow I’ll jump in the rear lockers for a look at the engine dividers and trays. Goes down pretty easy.

Ruger - I’m interested in hearing how the Kilmat works out. The engine noise hasn’t bothered me much on my RZX2, but I have noticed it’s quite a bit louder than my buddy’s Nautique GS22. Always figured it was probably just higher quality soundproofing materials on the Nautique. I wonder if putting the Kilmat on the rear locker/engine bay dividers will make the biggest difference.

To me, it does seem like the Raptor engines have a harsher note than my old marine power.

I don’t think it’s the raptor itself as much as just the size now and for my wife the vdrive noise vs a DD that the dog house had foam and vinyl insulating it which made it pretty quite. Friends BUs are just as loud if not louder with the monsoons

The raptor is significantly louder than the new direct injection GM’s. I’m going to sound like a total noob here but Gm does something different with their exhaust manifolds, I’m going blank on what it was though.

Also roger, the bu’s have used the raptors for the last few years and just recently switched to Gm this year. Also once you get the wedge down the rpm’s are crazy anyways.

Haven’t been in a direct injection GM so I’ll have to take your word on that one, or as mentioned above they have different insulation already incorporated in.Yep the wedge adds a tremendous amount of drag to them.

One other note for my experience my old DD obviously not originally made to surf or weight the same turned 2800-3000 rpm surfing. The newer engines all seem to turn 3800-4200 surfing with the kind of weight they are pushing compare to the older boats. Def makes a huge difference.

Any ways finished up the trays. Left the engine dividers alone as they get insulated by water in the bags so no real reason to do those or that was my thinking anyways. Now just need to test it out on the next warm day.

We found that the gaps around the underseat engine access "block" permitted a surprising amount of sound to slip by. Some closed-cell gasketing material on those edges helped a LOT.

WRT the exhaust noise comments... our EX343 has the CAT exhaust and it is MUCH quieter than almost any other wakeboat we've heard. The muffler is this simple little thing, and we don't have FAE, but we've had people who thought we did. I think there are a lot of variables affecting how much total engine+exhaust noise you hear in the passenger area. For us, sealing the gaps between the engine compartment and the passenger area was the biggest benefit and only cost a few dollars worth of adhesive-backed gasketing material from a hardware store.
