24ve Slappers

So after two years of slapping on a suck gate and surfing I’ve decided to try and install automated slappers or surf gates. I’ve seen multiple people do this over on wake garage and I figured I could do it for a very reasonable cost and I already love my wave with the suck gate.
I’m not using a controller as that would add quite a bit to the cost and I wanted to keep it as low as possible. Just rocker switches on the dash. I’m using a piece of black HDPE 3/4” for the gates and Lenco 102 4.25” stroke to power them.
Just started making progress and should be finished in the next few days. The one thing that’s making this project slightly difficult is the curvature of the back of the hull. It is not flat back there which makes the hinges not want to sit flat. I’m using a piece of 10mm high density EVA foam between the hinge and the hull to fill that space and create a somewhat flat surface. Here are a few pictures from the progress so far.

Keep posting pictures. I am very interested in what you are doing. I am deciding on which route to take and how to install either gate or tabs on my 24ve. I used a suck gate and designed a DIY suck gate that works very well on my boat. I did a few prototypes with varying degrees of success. I will be very interested in how your gate Style works. I found on my 24ve with a gate I still had to list heavily to the Surfside to get a good wave. I am leaning more towards a tab Style so that the boat can be evenly weighted and the tab will help list the boat.

The sucgates work so good on my buddy’s 21v we were talking about doing this setup. Keep us posted.

From what I have read and seen in videos. If you are designing your own stuff look into the design of the new go surf plates. Like tabs but don’t list your boat.

The one problem with the 24ve is the planing hull. It is not a displacement hull and the shape of the hull really responds well to the listing as well as putting the back corner into the water. That is the need for list. The suck gates worked well but we still needed to list. I like the old style GSA where the trailing edge was adjustable and could be fine tuned.

^^^ Agreed. On the Tige FB page one guy (Shaun Mahanay) has a 24ve with GSA and he still lists it for the biggest cleanest wave. I'll disagree with anyone that you can run a VE flat and get a nice clean wave without it rolling over. He also burns more fuel by running heavier than he did previously.

How is this project coming? I really want to see the results. I know a suck gate has worked well on my boat and others i hvae been in and I am all with you with automation. I am on the fence between gates or tabs. There are a few threads over on wake garage where controllers can be made rather inexpensively and make a sweet addition. They can be made with GPS, timed retract and deploy, configured to retract a and deploy at user set speeds, can make the transition a one touch function and can use blue tooth for programming. They have the codes and programming for these and you can do it for under 100 bucks. Just another option and something to keep us up nights dreaming of how we make our boats even more funtionable and getting the best wave to shread on.

The slappers are going well now ran into a few tough spots positioning switches and the actuators but I think we got it now. The original gates I cut were too small and the actuator would not have mounted properly so the delay has been waiting in a new sheet of HDPE to make bigger gates. It just arrived today so should be done tomorrow hopefully!

Did you run into any specific problems that would be noted with the install? Are you just doing the starboard side or will you be doing a Portside also?

Yes I did both side just took pictures of one side. Wiring was the easiest part with all the plug and play connectors and harnesses provided. And yes I ran into multiple problems. First off, the back of the hull is not a flat surface at all and has multiple different angles. I was expecting problems with this but it was quite a challenge mounting the actuators with the same angle as the back of the boat where the gates were mounted. We used big density closed cell foam between each hinge and actuator bracket in order to get proper angles and fill the space caused by the curves on the hull. I also cut the gates at about 9x16 shape and that was too small as the actuator would have gone right off the end. So I had to order another piece and recut it about 3 inches longer. After all the problems that occurred it turned out much better than expected so let’s hope the wave turns out good too.

Any chance to get out and check how these gates work? Got out and washed my boat up today to get it ready. And was looking at the transom and trying to decide how Gates would work. Kind of wonder if on the Surfside the gauge is going to cause a problem in the wave or not. Looking at what I have does not seem to give enough room to tuck under the swim platform and make it very thick as far as height goes. I'm very anxious to see how your gates work on the ve most importantly would love to see a video to see how the wave actually shapes.

Yes we did try them out. They do work well and are convenient to use. We are still listing the boat a little bit but close to the same setup as the suckgate. We have the surf side 100% full and the off side is about 60%. Wave is still getting dialed in so we can clean it up but other than that it’s worked pretty good. We tried an evenly weighted transfer and the wave is not super clean but I think it’s definitely do able.

Are you running any bow weight? I bought a bow sac this year, but haven't tried it out yet.
