Is my boat shot?? Engine moving a bunch...

2006 22i, and the engine seems like it has a lot of travel, when shifting from forward to reverse and back. So much so, that water will shoot out of the shaft seal, and you can see the engine/motor mounts rock forward. Check out these two clips and see what you think

You can clearly see in the second video that the engine mounts are not firmly attached to the stringers. The aluminum "L" pieces that are between the motor and the boat stringer (hull)

best case scenario is the bolts have loosened up and you just need to tighten them.
Worst case is rotten stringers in which case you're in for a lot of work.

I'm not sure if the 06 22i has wood or composite stringers.

Pull carpet in that area, cut out the caps in the floor over the mounts, retighten mounts/bolts, put caps back on, glass over caps and put new carpet in the boat. Then do an alignment on the engine.
      Oh Yeah!

Thanks guys - this all makes sense. I'm hoping that its not wood stringers that have just gone to mush. So you are saying those aluminum angle brackets are through bolted through the stringer, but I have to cut access holes in the deck to get to the back side? Any idea how thick the stringer is, and how far away I need to cut those access holes?

The frustrating thing is I just had 6k of work done - shaft log, new rudder, new strut, glass work, etc, including an alignment.

Wonder if they forgot to tighten up the bolt after the alignment?

Stringer is a composite material with an aluminum saddle. It is 1.5" thick. I will upload a photo of the floor cutouts here shortly.
            Oh Yeah!

Is it loose at the stringer or at the angle bracket where the engine mount meets?
              Oh Yeah!

                22i quick floor.png

Here is what your floor looks like under the carpet. The yellow floor has cutouts for the pylon bracket which holds your pylon.

The red area is the cutouts for you engine mounts. You will see fiberglass patches that cover those plates once you pull up the carpet in that area. They were stapled in place and a fiberglass patch went over the top of them.
                Oh Yeah!

If it was just done I would be right back at the shop and angry.
At the very least that's not something that they should have missed if it is in fact loose on the other side of the stinger. There's no way they did an alignment without noticing it was that loose.

It might be the case that the shop didn't know what they're doing and loosened the bolts not knowing they were through bolts? couldn't retighten them or thought they did and didn't know there are nuts on the other side. sad but It could be the case. going to take some work to fix it but it is not trash. I feel bad for you.

I dont want to even defend the work that was done for 6k and think you should be getting this issue resolved by the offending shop....there is one other thing to consider/ponder and I have to ask because I am a curious cat.

Alignment doesnt involve touching the motor beds, just the mounts. With the description of the work done, I have to ask if the boat had a run aground or other hard strike??
A lot of the work you listed would be standard with that situation. IF that was the case then theres a chance the bolts thru the aluminum L bracket motor beds damaged the stringer and that's where the slop is coming from. They would have missed it because running on a trailer shifting forward to reverse with no load in the prop MAY not have cause any shift(zero resistance on drive train so brackets wouldnt move). Put it in the water and it's a whole different story.

I'm just speculating and that's about the ONLY situation where I can see this happening where the shop gets any kind of "benefit of doubt". If all the said 6k worth of repairs were just done as maintenance to improve the boat then yes, totally unacceptable.

Yes, agreed. But then again, my shop would have water tested it after this work and I would question a shop that wouldn’t have .

Fair point. Occasionally we wont take something like this to the lake, but it is usually on an out of pocket repair vs insurance. A lake test for us is a 3 hour round trip so some customers dont want to spend the extra $. Would send them with a disclaimer though in regards to vibrations/leaks/ and other issues that couldnt be addressed on a trailer.
