I hope he is pulling our chain with the JB weld. I mean I love the stuff but doesn't play well with petroleum products. Is that set of gears expensive?
I think he meant the teeth broke away cleanly, as in "If I JBWelded them, you wouldn't be able to tell by their appearance because the break line is so clean".

You sir are correct, very clean breaks and discoloration under the breaks. I only jb weld engine blocks
Wow, I wonder what could cause a failure like that! I’ve seen busted gears in differentials but typically they pretty much grenade after a tooth starts getting recycled. Buildup of heat maybe from lack of lube?

I am really curious myself, last spring after purchasing boat I did the fluids, the vdrive was low on the dipstick but not too bad. Everything inside is very clean and no signs of heat damage. The way to teeth broke off was just perfect, no chunks missing and they literally fit right back into place, no damage to 9b gear. Here is what $3400.00 looks like to Walter's and a pic of a ruined vacation looks like to me 20190708_223144.jpg20190708_221502.jpg
Sorry! a new drive is $3400, in all honesty I could just purchase the #10 gear for $400, make my own gaskets and reuse the u-joints and bearings and be back up and running.
I think I am going to go with a full rebuild kit and new gear for right at $1000.00, rebuild kit comes with all new bearings, seals and gaskets and u-joints.
Overall it is not a bad job, pulling it was just over an hour. disassembly took me 3 hours but if I had to do it again would be about an hour an a half.
I am not familiar with the internals of a v-drive, thank you very much for the parts photo. Is that u-joint actually part of the drive? Why would they do that? I expected a set of bevel gears at the proper angle since the angle is fixed in a v-drive. U-drives don't have linear transfer curves which is why FWD cars (which DO require variable angles) usually use constant-velocity (CV) joints. Why a u-joint in a marine v-drive?!?
No idea why, lol my mind goes to that shaft housing is bent so they used a ujoint!
Since I got raped by Walter's on parts I ordered a service manual (which I found one online afterwards) it includes GA drawings, be happy to share it.
The part closest to the orange rag is the pump? Do you get new pump parts for the 1000 bucks?
Love that it is splayed out on the kitchen table I am glad I am not the only one who dose this. Cant wait to show my wife.
Had a guy take apart that pump once because his buddy told him thats where the impeller is Not a fun one to put back together when you didnt take it apart lol.
So it is the pump. Is it a gear type pump like the tranny? Just showed the pic to my wife she didn't notice anything unusual. She did ask if it was out of our Boat.
