I see whitewater like that and think hardshell kayak, paddle, and helmet. Whitewater kayaking is the single best sport I've ever done. We still have a quiver of three kayaks, including one playboat and one runner. I've taught hundreds of people to roll, my nickname is "Roll Nazi" because I'm relentless about making people's rolls bombproof so it's pure instinct when they're upside down in a Class 4+ boofing off rocks.
I'd sure hate to have a jetboat approaching when I'm surfing a wave on a river like that....

I'd sure hate to have a jetboat approaching when I'm surfing a wave on a river like that....Only time we motor by full steam is if we get the wave to come on thru from the rafters/kayak guys. Later in the summer when the big commercial trips are out can be brutal. 10 boats all stretched out. Thats when you nose up to the bank and have the rod ready and just fish until the group gets by. Most the gear boat guys always just wave us by.

Yeah, we've done "big raft" trips too. We'd rent the boats from EWU and do self-supported trips all over North Idaho. But once we tried kayaks, there was no going back. In fact, the first time I got back in a big paddle raft after I knew how to kayak, I was absolutely terrified. I would read the water and want to take a certain line, but alone I could not redirect a raft full of 8-9 other people paddling in another direction. In a hardshell, you have a lot more options and a LOT more control.
