I am contemplating purchasing some extra weight for the front of the boat. I have heard about people buying chunks of lead to add to lockers. Where do people go to buy lead? I have no idea.
I would like to know myself, I am considering putting some up front.
Has anyone tried buying some bulk lead shot from a hunting store like Cabelas. I thought about buying some and packaging it in some sort of bag with handles, maybe a duffle bag. I am looking for something that is cheap to build and easy to maneuver, sort of like pop products.
I have seen some bags that are used for scuba diving that have handles on them and do not cost much. They can hold 50 pounds and seem like they would be perfect for our application. I did a search on Ebay and almost bought a few. But I am not running any lead right now, so I have not done it.
My brother in law melted some lead from a shooting range for me. That is the best, he breathes the lead fumes and I get good ballast. A brick in a brownie pan 1.5 inches X 12 X 10 weighs about 55 pounds. I have them sitting on the stakes to stop my immature trees from blowing over in my yard. The trees are probably good now and it is time to put them back in the boat.
If you go to the big tire stores like Hibbons or anything like that they will give you the lead lots of times. My friend and I have made 300 pounds of lead.
What we did was take some pvc pipe, I believe 4" diameter and put an end cap in it. Then put it in a 5 gal. bucket full of ice water, melt the lead and pour it in. When your done cap the top and you have a very nice set up, and the lead doesn't get out. I believe it's a 8 or maybe 6 inch piece weighs exactly 50 lbs. I have a nylon strap handle I made that I use to lift the weights with. Works real slick, and you can move from side to side in the front lockers, works great when I don't have a lot of people on my boat.
Any questions pm me

I used a turkey fryer's gas flame. Melted the lead in a cast iron pan made for melting lead that I picked up from Atwoods. Has a pour spout on it as well.
Melt the lead, then pull all of the hangers and crap out using a magnet. I used one from autozone that has a longer telescoping reach on it.
Lead fumes are not good for you. You can get a respirator if you wanted to, I just did it outside, and and made sure I was UPWIND of the fumes, and didn't stay over the fire for any amount of period.
The dimensions, make your own up. Just go to the store, decide what size pipe you want, and then buy the caps as well. Then you can also make them as heavy or light as you want. When you get them as heavy as you want, cut off the extra pipe, and cap them. Then next time you know exactly how long to make it. My finished weights with end caps on them are anywhere from 12-14 in long. Sometimes I couldn't get the cap all the way on there due to the air pressure.
The bucket of ice is just to make the PVC cold, and make the lead cool faster. The lead isn't hot enough to melt through the PVC, but I wanted as much protection as possible. If you did pour a lot of melted lead it would melt through the PVC, and I just didn't want it.
Make sense?

I have some extra caps and pipe, and lead. While it's not practical to send you the lead, I would ship you the caps and pipe if your interested if you paid for the shipping.
Also if your in the OKC area I'll be back over x-mas time frame and could drop off the extra lead I have, probably close to 50+ lbs, and you could pick it up if you are ever near.
just an idea.
Let me know.

Also, anyone in the Bakersfield, CA area want some lead? I have 2 50 lb weights I made in the above fasion. 25 bucks and you can have them both. It's basically what I paid for the caps and PVC. I don't need 300 in my boat now that I have the ballast system in. Let me know. Also these don't have straps on them, but would make them for you if you wanted to buy the material or pay me for the material. It's just simple one inch webbing from any climbing or sports store. Works great. Let me know if anyone want's these, they are just sitting in my garage taking up space.

Thanks for the offer. I'm never over near OKC...if I were I would definitely take you up on it.
Well, the work wanted me to move, so I moved. I still don't have the boat out here yet. I'm hoping to get her out here over x-mas break. Hopefully I'll have my storage area arranged by then.

I could probably take those off of your hands if you are coming to the reunion at Lake Mead. You could sort of even Auction them off to the highest bidder. Let me know what your minimum price is and I'll see if that is worth it to me and if someone offers you more...I understand.
