Another Good Day on the Lake

Another good day on the lake. I hope you guys are having as much fun as we are!

This trip saw a bit of everything. It was our annual fireworks night on the water, so we got a later start than we normally do. We dedicated more time trying to dial our wave in following advice from Jason. We did see some success, but also ended with a few more questions. We only ran our stock ballast, plus our 350 pound PNP bags in the rear lockers. Nothing else this time. We did whatever it took to get the bow high to 9* and a list to the surf side of 4-5*. To do that I had everyone sit right behind me (we all surf goofy), and with all the bags full we took a reading off my phone. We were listed just a bit to the goofy side and were almost level front to back. This surprised me. I thought we would start off bow high and would need more weight up there. We set the tabs at 4 and 4 and pretty much left them there. I started dumping water out of the bow and a little off the rear PNP. It listed over pretty easily to the 4-5* we wanted. As we let water out of the bow we got as high as 7* bow high before the boat started leveling off again. I kept emptying and we went all the way back to level?!? So I filled it back up to where we were at around 7* and then started playing with the tabs. I know this seems weird, but I believe our best wave came in at 2 and 2. Our speed varied between 10.8 and 12. 10.8 saw the most push and 12 saw the longest wave. That was to be expected.

Overall I would say that this was our best wave, to date. By focusing more on getting the boat into the right position, instead of actual ballast weight, we lengthened the rideable section of our wave 2-3 feet. We may have lost a bit in height without using any extra floor ballast, but overall I would pick this wave. I'm pretty confused at our ballast situation not being able to get the bow higher. I thought for sure we were going to have a problem getting it down, but that was not the case. In any case I look forward to more "testing".

Let me just get my picture out of the way, so we can focus on the real stars of our boat:
    002 copy.jpg

Ashlee, who just turned 12, really found the wave this trip. She is now constantly getting up every time. Our focus was helping her get her feet into position so the board would become more stable. That paid off well for her and she had no problems at all getting a slack rope. She'll be tossing it next week for sure.

Livy, our 13 year old is starting to play with a skim board that is clearly too big for her. But she likes it and really wants to start spinning.
    016 copy.jpg

She is totally at home on the Chaos. Trying to get her to spin it, and do BIG turns.
    020 copy.jpg

Our first sunset on this boat. All the forest fire smoke made for an interesting one.
    024 copy.jpg

Lucas, our 6 year old, is tearing it up on the knee board. He always rides for a bit and then stands up on it to "practice surfing"....then quickly falls off.
    028 copy.jpg

My wife, Mary, was all ready to try to surf for the VERY first time this trip. She was going to try right after Lucas was done kneeboarding. At that point we came across a boat that was broke down and needed a tow to the marina... the one on the opposite side of the lake! By the time we got there the sun had set and we couldn't get back in the water. Huge disappointment. I really wanted her to try surfing. But, hopefully we got some good boat karma and the tow in provided a great dance party that was pretty funny. They put on a good show for the people we were towing in.
    033 copy.jpg

None of the fireworks pictures I took showed up very well, but it was a good show. Afterwards we rushed back to the marina to get home. We all liked the blue lights in the water. It's the first time we have seen them.

On a side note, the bugs were so bad after the sun went down! We knew it would be bad and came prepared for it, but it was worse than ever! When we got home, there was literally 1000's of dead bugs in the boat. I could scoop up handfuls of them. It's going to take all week to get ready for the next trip.

Definitely looks like a killer day on the water brotha!! I’m a little jealous as we had a huge car event in town all last week, and cooked on the asphalt, instead of seeing a lake!

I started the summer dialing the wave by rise and tilt of the boat, per Jason’s instructions, I got away from that some with all of my issues, and trying to get as much weight as I could push, to try and add size to our wave. I’ll be out all next weekend, and plan on going back to Jason’s system, which requires less weight in the boat anyways, which is definitely an advantage to our slug of a boat! We don’t have any kids, but have a pile of friend’s kids riding behind us, and it’s a blast to watch them go from the frustration of not being able to stand up, to them learning a hell of a lot faster than us old people!!

You guys definitely made a deposit in the old karma bank on the tow!!

Well, a car that I've been building for 4 (yes, 4!!!!!!) years is finally coming to an end this week. I should pick it up from upholstery in the next few days, then just a few tweeks at my place after that. So we may have to forgo a few weekends at the lake for some car shows and drives. We'll see.

We are usually off the lake by sundown so it's not an issue. We just stayed late this time.

What is it?? Hot August Nights in Reno is a pretty fun week, if you’re looking for one to put on the calendar! Somewhere in the neighborhood of 6000 registered cars. We could probably work in a morning if riding on a lake here, too, if you guys want to check it out!

I actually spent an evening at Hot August Nights the day before I purchased my first Tige. Picked it up there in Reno and then drove it back to SLC. Good times.

I think I've talked about it on here before: 1964 Sunbeam Alpine.....No one's ever heard of them before, and no one's ever done what I've done to one. So it's pretty unique.

I'm not really a Corvette/LS junkie, is that an LS2?? Cool build. Though I have to tease a bit....AC in a convertible??!!
You crazy. Unless you have a rag top for it

Super cool to see the family out enjoying the boat. Looks like everyone is having fun. Glad you could use your tow boat for a good long tow as well.

That’s super rad, and I may not have heard of it, but I do dig it. That thing is going to rip, for sure! Hope we can get you back up here with it!!

It's an LS1. Price was right and it will have no trouble destroying tires. It's an Arizona car, so it has to have AC. And yes, it does have a soft top. I one had an old CJ-7 with NO top or doors, but did have ICE cold AC. The vents were attached to the bottom of the dash so the air blew right between my legs! No top or doors in the heat of AZ and I still froze my nuts off!

Man, we are having such a good time. Saturdays can't come fast enough. We always talk of the guys living on lakes. How cool would it be to take an evening ride before bed, or blow off some steam before dinner every day? We need to move!

It might have about 10 miles on it now. I drove it to the upholstery shop from my house. It was a cold day, but just a quick 3/4 blip of the throttle would bring the rear end out. I need to weigh it, but it should come in under 2500 pounds.

                    Nice car! Definitely something different!

Not trying to brag or anything but having a place on the lake is something nothing can beat, we have our 5th wheel permanently there. It is so nice to go out in the morning and then again after dinner and just pull into the covered boat slip and have a place to stay right on the lake.

What lake do you boat on in Utah? I know worlds are being hosted there this year.

We mostly boat at Willard Bay. It's an easy drive to get there and it has warm water. The tradeoffs are that it is shallower than any other lake around at 15ish feet and the bugs. Willard bay is man made by a causeway. That causeway separates Willard Bay from the Great Salt Lake, and that is where the bugs come from.

I believe worlds is being held at Pineview. We like Pineview, but we tend to boat mostly at state parks as we have a park pass and get in for free. We'd spend A LOT more money boating at Pineview if we went there each week. Pineview also is smaller and tends to get crowded. We put up with the bugs to so we can have wide open space to play around on. That last two weeks have been pretty much glass. You don't get that anywhere else until October when the cold blooded foke go into hibernation.

Anyone on a lake need a Facilities/maintenance manager at their business? I'll be right there!

I didnt realize the lake you are in is so shallow. I'm wondering if that is also having an effect on your wave. I have head many times that shallow water will affect wave but I dont really know what the threshold/depth limit is.

We talk about that all the time and it's my wife's dream (and I think soon to be plan) to be living on a lake. Especially one that has a longer season than here. Yesterday was the last day of a full lake...

Well you do need water for those potatoes, but that does seem too soon. Looking around I don’t see a lot of lake front in the West. Texas? All day long, but then I’d live in Texas and would have to beat up everyone that says Texas is the biggest (I’m from Alaska).

Gotta make room for snow that isnt here. They usually take it pretty easy between now and Labor day. After labor day it's a foot a day drop every day. My favorite weekend is 2 weeks after Labor Day. Lakes empty and theres still plenty of water. Days are getting pretty short though and it's cold morning starts. Heaters pretty much a must.
